Is Chris Jones in the league?

People don't always understand how much a punter matters in a football game. Field position means so much in the NFL. A 10 or 20 yard starting position difference is one less 10 or 20 yard play you need to go down and score. And yet it almost gets treated as an afterthought. It's why every time we try to return a kick and don't make it back to the 20 or get a penalty on the return it makes me sick.

So if Gallup and Schultz can both be had for 11/year, who would either of you keep?

Gregory is clearly priority number 1 no matter what, but the tradeoff between Gallup/Schultz is fascinating to me.

I can't see any scenario where Gallup gets more than Schultz, so if you would keep Schultz if the salaries are equal, how much lower would Gallup's have to be to keep him instead?
For the sake of continuity, it'd be great to keep Schultz, but I don't think it'd be so difficult to find a comparable replacement (or even an upgrade). IMO, Gallup is more unique and would be more difficult to replace ... although he too is replaceable.

I mean most of this season we were without Gallup and things looked great. So I'm not sure how to quantify his impact on the offense.

Of course I also remember some of the insane sideline catches he has made this season and certainly see some reason to want him still around. I really appreciate the player he is but I wouldn't be heart broken if we lost him and replaced him with a guy that can get more separation on the short and intermediate routes. And provide maybe a little more elite deep speed.

I wonder what Gallup will really get. Outside of Golladay no free agent WRs last year really got big money. Corey Davis got what like 12.5? Otherwise basically every other free agent WR was counting under 10 mil on the cap in 2021 after free agency. And I don't think Corey Davis or Golladay has either team thinking it was money well spent at this point. I think the NFL WR market is starting to come down. NFL teams are realizing that the money isn't necessarily worth it.

Gallup coming off a sub 600 yard season may not garner as much money as some of us think. And if he does good for him, I'm going to go into the draft and find someone. We have the luxury of working a rookie in as the third WR because Ceedee and Cooper are so good and will get the defensive attention.

JuJu Smith-Schuster took a 1/8 prove it deal to go back with the Steelers and potentially cash in later. He got hurt, so it backfired, but I think that type of deal would make the most sense for both Gallup and us.

We could keep both him and Schultz that way, while allowing him the possibility to cash in next year, and buying us time to replace him.

I'd take both at 11, but if it came down to one or the other I'd take Schultz. It's just simply #1 TE versus #3 WR.
I think that's an important point about #1 TE vs #3 WR.
Replacing the TE carries greater risk, for sure. It comes down to whether you are willing to roll the dice on someone else being as good or better. And if you make the switch, it'll take a minute for the new guy to get up to speed.
I'm fine rolling the dice on this one, but understand others thinking differently.

For sure, Gallup is replaceable. He's very good in clutch situations and I think that's more difficult to replace. I could see him as a capable #2 if it ever comes to that in Dallas. But he's replaceable.

And, just to chime in on Gregory, yeah, he'd be my top priority without question.

Now that would make the most sense to me. He is 25 and this has basically been his lowest statistical output in the NFL. Take another bit at the apple next year and in the mean time Dallas can draft and develop a David Bell, Jahan Dotson (I know Kiper is calling him a first rounder but I just don't know that to be true right now), If Olave slips to the second round or a number of other receivers. I wouldn't even be opposed to a real bigger WR who can provide more in the redzone. Someone like Drake London provides size and length that we don't really have now in our receivers either.

Yep, I can replace Schultz and Gallup. Or even get by without them.

Gregory would be very difficult to replace. In the draft guys with his athletic ability and game breaking ability are hard to find outside of the first round. And yes I know he was a second round pick but those guys have warts by then (Serious injury red flags, no collegiate production or like Gregory concerns with substance abuse. Now that Gregory is on the right path he is my only major priority and the key in my opinion to potentially having one of the best defenses in the NFL.

On the flip side, he may actually want to get out. He's the third wheel here basically and unless the passing game ramps up to 11 again, he's pretty unlikely to put up big numbers with us again.

Also possible, take a prove it deal somewhere that you have a chance to get the passes to put up another 1,000 yard season. In Dallas even with a healthy season he probably max has 800 ish yards. There are only so many balls to go around. Of course as a receiver you have to be careful with that. It often doesn't work out. If you're suddenly with a mediocre QB and expected to be the number 1 WR, he could fail really badly and be in worse shape then he would be in Dallas. See the top 2 WR's from free agency last year. Golladay may have a worse season this year than Gallup. Corey Davis only has 400 and some yards on the year. Gallup may catch him too despite all his missed games.

If I were Gallup an ideal scenario would be to be a number 2 WR somewhere that has a high level QB. But that's easier said than done sometimes. There are only so many Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes, Dak and Herbert types out there capable of really putting up big passing numbers. But maybe a team like the Raiders would be in the market.

And Gregory was projected as a top 5-10 pick until the off field stuff went sideways.

He seems to be in a good place now and seems genuinely like he loves the competition, so I don't worry about him packing it in after getting paid. Even if/when we re-sign him I'd still take someone like Ojabo in the 1st and happily enjoy the fact that we'd have a top 3 pass rush in the league over the next 3-4 years.

Yeah having an abundance of pass rushers seems like the easiest way to build a dominant defense. I think our defense has really come alive recently because we have Gregory, Lawrence and Parsons out there. I don't want to force a pass rusher but I'm not passing up a guy either. Lawrence's contract is going to need to be dealt with at some point. It would be nice to have a guy capable of filling his shoes when we have to deal with it.

If Lawrence keeps playing near this level I don't think it has to be dealt with though, if he's willing I'd even extend him for a few years at like 15/year, throw some guaranteed money at him and knock his cap hits down significantly over the next few years.

He's starting to really get after it rushing on the interior which is perfect with guys like Parsons and Gregory best suited to rush in space.
