2020 Training Camp Thread

Feh. He could he half dead and equal Witten's production last year.
What's a breakout. I expect 500-700 yards and some actual yac. We have 3 very talented recievers. I don't expect to feed the TE the ball.

He's at best the 5th option and probably 6th including Pollard.

That doesn't scream breakout to me.
So you’re saying the TE won’t be a significant contribution to our passing game. That would be very interesting

I'd guess 500-600 yards, don't know if you'd call that significant or not. I wouldn't. He'll contribute but I don't see breakout. I also don't think he's particularly special. I don't see him doing anything 30 other TEs in the league wouldn't do if given the reps.

I expect numbers similar to above, and for him I think that would constitute somewhat of an emergence. I dont think we've seen his capabilities yet. I could be wrong.

Yeah I don't think he is elite but I think he has the capabilities to be a very good starting NFL TE. Which would be twice the weapon Witten has been the last few years.

I think that's realistic but personally I think it'll be a little less than this. Just not enough balls to go around.

Observations from Cowboys training camp: Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has yet to stand out, leaving starting job up for grabs

The latest news and notes from Cowboys training camp.

FRISCO — In March, the Cowboys signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to be one of their starting safeties in 2020.

Seven practices into camp, the role is far from a lock, regardless what comes of Earl Thomas.

Forget for a moment the developing situation involving Thomas, the seven-time Pro Bowler whom the Baltimore Ravens released on Sunday and has drawn the Cowboys’ interest. Clinton-Dix is struggling to seize the starting job on his own merit.

Darian Thompson arguably has been more impressive in camp.

That included Sunday morning when Clinton-Dix misplayed at least one pass in practice, aggressively playing the ball and finding himself out of position to contest the catch. Meanwhile, Thompson worked alongside safety Xavier Woods.

Clinton-Dix’s one-year contract includes $2.25 million fully guaranteed.

If the season started today, it might be Thompson and Woods in the base defense against the Los Angeles Rams.

Perhaps no other position on the Cowboys’ roster will take greater shape during the next three weeks. Over the coming days, the club could tap into its cornerback depth, doing more cross-training there. Cornerbacks Daryl Worley and rookie fourth-round pick Reggie Robinson are among the options to see safety action.

— Mike McCarthy turned up the dial on Sunday. The Cowboys ran a “tempo period” where eight plays were executed in rapid succession. The first-, second- and third-team units all took their turn at an eight-play series. Woods was an early standout, collapsing down in coverage to break up two passes intended for tight end Dalton Schultz in a three-play span.

— Amari Cooper. Michael Gallup. CeeDee Lamb. The Cowboys’ top three wide receivers are firmly established. But for that matter, so seem their top four. Cedrick Wilson caught an Andy Dalton pass on two straight passes during the second-team tempo period, the first a long gain on a deep crosser and the second a shallow pass on a quick-hitter. A time should come when Wilson is called upon in 2020. He seems poised to answer it. “He looks fast,” Cooper said after practice. “He looks good. He looks detailed in his route-running, and he looks like he’s ready to take that next step.”

— Rookie cornerback Trevon Diggs stuck with wide receiver Noah Brown during an out-and-up double move early in practice, fluidly breaking up a deep pass. His ball skills give him a high developmental ceiling as his technique improves.

— Dallas remains thin at offensive tackle. Left tackle Tyron Smith, right tackle La’el Collins and swing tackle Cam Erving were spectators in practice. All are expected to be active in Week 1. Backup tackle Mitch Hyatt, who has missed time of late with an undisclosed ailment, exited the field during position drills. He did not return.

— Granted, the Cowboys have lacked quality protection. But defensive end Bradlee Anae did what he should against the competition level, piecing together his most disruptive practice. The rookie fifth-round pick recorded a would-be sack on consecutive snaps in team drills. On the first, undrafted rookie linebacker Francis Bernard broke up a pass after the play continued.

— As expected, defensive end Everson Griffen’s participation level in practice expanded Sunday to include team drills. The Cowboys eased him along gradually after he agreed to terms on Aug. 12. Nose tackle Dontari Poe’s workload similarly has progressed after he opened camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list; he tore his quad muscle last season.

— Nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis (ankle sprain) missed his second straight practice. He won’t practice all week, coach Mike McCarthy said.

Jarwin’s biggest concern is going to be blocking. He has to be able to pass protect and run block to be on the field to begin with.

Teams are going to scheme our WRs, and if they are in man coverage Jarwin is going to have chances to do some damage vs secondaries that have their back turned.

But he has to be on the field for it to happen.
