No McClay literally told me that with nobody else around so there wasn't much of a reason to lie, he was more on board with Taco than people like to remember because it's easy to scapegoat Marinelli.

That's just one anecdote but even guys like Broaddus came out during last season and said McClay was on board with it, and I think McClay admitted as much on some radio interview.

I have no doubt that it was close and Marinelli was ultimately the deciding factor but the idea that Watt was way higher and Marinelli just strong armed everybody else isn't what happened.

Well now I'm worried that McClay told you something about Chaisson...

I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube content on Michael Gallup. He’s quickly becoming one of the best WRs in the game, imo. I think he’s that good.

Hah no, I wish, but the way I described Watt is basically exactly what Stephen described so I think they're considering Chaisson in that role for sure.

That role didn't exist in Marinelli's defense so that was a huge part of it, but I still blame McClay and the personnel guys for not being creative enough to sell that sort of role to Marinelli.

Since you're in nickel/dime at least half the time Watt would've been a "designated pass rusher" at least half the time, so it was really just closed-mindedness all the way around.

I'm not suggesting that there was a huge divide, only that scouts had Watt rated higher and Marinelli was ultimately the deciding factor, with Garrett seconding it. And I wish that McClay stood up more for the scouts rather than going along with the coaches.

I mean I get it to some extent. The coaches dictate what they want in their scheme. You have a great player who doesn't fit that rigid structure. So you pass on him because the coaches won't use him.

Truth be told I think Watt could just play RE and never worry about it.

FRISCO - “We’ll certainly look to improve (at cornerback),'' Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said the other day, and at the moment, it was assumed he meant "improve'' via this week's NFL Draft.

But an NFL source tells us that the Cowboys' search for improvement also includes the examination of help from former Cincinnati Bengals standout Dre Kirkpatrick.
Kirkpatrick, a first-round pick in the 2012 draft, spent eight years with the Bengals, the former Alabama product serving as a full-time starter for the entirely of his career. Kirkpatrick, 30, is 6-2 and 190 and has ballhawk skills.

He also had a contract that drove Cincinnati to make him a cap-related release, thus saving the Bengals $8.3 million in cap savings in 2020.

"I don't feel like I've done anything for them to remove me," Kirkpatrick said back on Dec. 30. "I feel like I've done everything right. I feel like I was one of the top guys when I was on the field."
Since then, however, Cincinnati has agreed to terms with former Minnesota cornerback Trae Waynes, a first-round pick in the 2015 draft. Waynes received a three-year deal worth $42 million.

And Kirkpatrick - in fairness part of a Bengals defense that last year ranked 31st in the NFL in yards allowed per pass attempt - is on the street.

We've made mention of Aqib Talib, the DFW native, as a free-agent candidate here. But he's 34, and despite the fact he's repped by Todd France - who is also the agent for front-burner contract issue Dak Prescott - there's been little buzz there.

Of course, early in free agency, the Cowboys lost Byron Jones to the Miami Dolphins; Dallas was prepared for that farewell, and while it retained Anthony Brown via free agency and also added young journeyman Maurice Canady, the desire for a corner remains for a team that has Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis atop the depth chart.

The Cowboys could solve the issue in this NFL Draft, with pick No. 17 and their interest in Alabama corner Trevon Diggs or Clemson corner A.J. Terrell. (They also love Florida corner C.J. Henderson, but expect him to be gone.)

Or they could get through the draft ... and then close a deal with Dre Kirkpatrick, who is absolutely on their radar this week.

And old coaches have those "rigid schemes" you're speaking of. And 'their way" of doing things, which don't change. And that's how people get passed by. The rest of the world progresses, and they don't. And they end up like Monte Kiffin, with a once great scheme that has been figured out and exploited. And run out of the league on a rail.

Truth be told I think Watt could just play RE and never worry about it.

I completely agree. And honestly, in my opinion, this draft is shaping up like a 'do over' and a 'make up call' for missing Watt in 2017. With the team touting and showing that new-found 'flexibility' by drafting a player like Chaisson. If he's still available of course.

That would be my pick. Certainly over Kirkpatrick.

And Fisher is just plain wrong when he says this:

"Kirkpatrick, a first-round pick in the 2012 draft, spent eight years with the Bengals, the former Alabama product serving as a full-time starter for the entirely of his career.

That's simply not true, and it took him quite a while to gain traction and become a starter with the Bengals. And 10 career interceptions in an 8-year career doesn't scream "ballhawk skills" to me.

This has a Nolan Carroll vibe to it for me.

If they sign kirkpatrick without even talking to Logan Ryan it will be disappointing.

Yet more stupid noise about Earl Thomas, err I mean Jamal Adams.

I can't figure out why they won't just sign Taylor Gabriel for no draft compensation.
:shrug
Because Gabriel kinda sucks? Outside of taking a bubble screen to the house, he is not a traditional slot guy.

Outside of the fact Nolan Carroll was even less of a fulltime starter, you might be onto something.

Adams is another RW31 in waiting. Worthless the farther he gets from the LOS. Find an Ed Reed type already.
