- For all-time DT, you think Lilly is routinely outside Top 3? Behind Mean Joe Greene? Fair. Behind Buchanan. Possibly. Behind Merlin Olsen and Alan Page? Sometimes...for you to say ‘remotely’ far from true, you make it sound like Lilly is a middle-of-pack HOFer, which I’ve never heard of. Im interested to see where you think Lilly ranks, and/or your perception of where the general public ranks Lilly.

- Which Cowboy is more associated with being GOAT at their position than Lilly?

Not, I mean the perception among non-cowboys fans.

After a pretty thorough search of non-Cowboys sites (not necessarily the most reputable, but they’re non-Cowboys) , Lilly’s ranking:
- NFL’s 100 Greatest Players All Time (#2)
- NFL’s 100 All-Time Team (unranked, 1 of 7)
- Athlon (#4)
- Bleacher Report (#4)
- USA Today (#3)
- Yardbarker (#2)
- Grueling Truth (#3)
- Elliott Harrison, NFL.com (#1)
- Gil Brandt, NFL.com (#1 although biased)
- FoxSports (#4)
- ProFootballJournal (#1)

I’ll revise my comments to Lilly being consensus Top 4 instead of Top 3, but still the highest acclaimed Cowboy at his respective position.

How does LA rank in those?

Yeah. I'd put him up there. He was a very, very good corner. Without that achilles tear, I think he could have been HOF caliber great.
Ummm, yeah. Gonna just have to call bullshit on that one.

Pup was a good corner his first three years before the injury. But to say he was Hall Of Fame great in that time span is a stretch, especially in an era where most teams ran the ball.

What's that? You disagree?

Oh well. I'll get over it eventually.

"Fans"

That's great to hear Lilly getting that much love. Usually the old timers get discounted just because it was so long ago, but I guess all those Pro Bowls and first team All-Pros are too hard to ignore.

Bill Bates for me, he had heart and soul for this team. I know not drafted.
If we are talking favorite Cowboys of all time, Bates is top 3 for me. I would rank favorites as...

Irvin
Bates
Aikman

Larry Allen.

Fair enough. LA was my #2.

With younger fans, LA probably would be #1 and we all know iamtdg has the capacity of a 19 year old girl rushing Delta Delta Delta.

For reference, the other guards that popped up higher than LA in those rankings from my earlier post are John Hannah, Gene Upshaw and Bruce Matthews.

Pleasantly surprised by the love Tony Dorsett still gets. For many rankings, he got ranked higher than I originally thought he would.

For Emmitt, it’s funny Gil Brandt of all people has him the lowest.

Emmitt Smith
- Gil Brandt of NFL.com (#11)
- NFL 100 All-Time Team (unranked, 1 of 7 modern)
- Bleacher Report (#2)
- Athlon (#4)
- Simplemost.com (#1)
- NBCsports.com fan poll (Not in Top 5)
- Men’s Journal (#4)
- The Sports Drop (#4)
- Sportscasting.com (#3)
- Yardbarker (#5)
- 247 Sports (#4)
- Lineups (#3)
- Complex (#4)

Tony Dorsett
- Gil Brandt of NFL.com (#9)
- NFL 100 All-Time Team (Not in Top 7 modern)
- Bleacher Report (#8)
- Athlon (#14)
- Simplemost.com (#14)
- NBCsports.com fan poll (Not in Top 5)
- Men’s Journal (Not in Top 10)

LeRoy Jordan was an all timer in my books as a LB. IF there were still Running fullback position, Walt Garrison would fill the bill.

ok, so on this theme of all timers to wear the star.....

As a child, my brothers and I lived with my dad in some apartments in Dallas called The Village. It so happened that Mel Renfro lived there too. I used to play with his kids, and every once in a while we would see him running around. I was young, but since I had spent much quality time watching games at Texas Stadium, I was well aware of just how good he was. He was Deion before Deion. He was a ball hawk, a sure tackler, and a threat to score from multiple positions: defense, special teams (punt and kick return). Mel Renfro is one of my 5 all time Cowboys.

So nitpicky. I just did a google search and these sites, written by fans, are the top results. Some are glorified blogs.

Please enlighten me the consensus opinion of your neighborhood watch group.

I'm not being nitpicky. My impression is that's what we were talking about all along, and that's certainly what my initial response was about. Talking about what professionals or experts think is not at all what I meant. I'm talking about Joe Fan, which is what I thought you were talking about.

I'd be very surprised if you started a poll on r/nfl if Lilly got even in the top 5 for greatest DT in history.

Bob Lilly - I think consensus amongst non-Cowboys fans that Lilly is Top 3 all-time, if not GOAT

This is what you said Phil.

I think you'd get a lot of Sapp, Randle, Green, etc. Even Aaron Donald.

I'd be surprised if Lilly was consensus top 3 among non cowboys fans.

That’s fine. Based on your feedback, When I stated fans, I hereby declare that I meant fans that know history and also referred to modern age. So left flanker Curly Jim Jackson from 1912 doesn’t count and neither do 9-year old fans that think OBD is better than Jerry Rice.
