Yup, the 2001 NFL draft.

We had a compensatory 3rd we used on Willie Blade. It was one of the years we were missing a first from the Galloway trade.

Bam! Memory isn't shot yet.

He was easily the worst punter in the league last year. There's no excuse not to replace him. There's no question there are better punters out there. Hell, Colquitt was below average and he'd be a big upgrade.

Compared to the top punters in the league, we lost nearly ten yards of field position per punt.

PER. PUNT.

It's hard to put into words how bad our punting situation was.

Keep in mind punter is just about the cheapest position on the field to address.

It would be lazy and frankly incompetent to not address this right now.
 
Brad Sham kept insisting Jones was hurt at the end of last year... his back, I think? But I wonder if they can tell he's recovered and would be okay this year.

Otherwise, yep, no reason to not replace him.

Took Dallas and Denver to the Super Bowl.
I prefer to factor postseason success to a decent degree.
To be fair, I'm having to factor it more with guys like Meredith and Morton since they are before my time.
No slight towards Romo, this team has had a ton of really good QBs...

Also it was just a different era. I think Romo was just pound for pound a better player than most of the rest just due to the era he's in.

Romo is easily third. Romo’s ability is on par with Aikman Staubach, but Romo seemed to be cursed with timing. Romo had talent around him, just didn’t support him in the right timing.
  • For Aikman, you’ve got the 9 turnovers in SB 27 and Larry Brown in 30. Larry Brown INT Favre in NFCC. Kosar and defense hold off 49ers in 1993 NFCC after Aikman concussed, leading to the James Washington should-be-MVP SB 28
  • Staubach had 3 points given up in SB 6 and Randy White/Martin MVPs over Denver. In fact, I don’t think defense gave up double digits in 72 or 77 playoffs.

For Romo:
  • 2007 TO injured in Carolina just before playoffs
  • 2014 Only time where defense came up for Romo was DLaw strip sack of Stafford in 2014. However, followed up in GB w DeMarco Murray fumbling, Bailey missing FG and the Dez no catch also bad timing.
  • Ultimately, when Romo’s matured into elite QB and team comes together, his timing sucks it’s too late and body breaks down

Bad timing for Aikman when Irvin got injured vs Carolina 1996 and we couldn’t do shit on offense after that.

Or I simply have an opinion you don't like, because you think that I ranked a certain quarterback (who I happened to like) too low.

He was 3 yards per punt worse last year than he was the year before so maybe he was hurt.

But the problem is, even before last year he was one of the worst in the league. He just isn't good.

Not so fast. Willie Blade was not the pick, he was taken in the regular draft. The pick was Darren Benson.

Clarify to mean peak ability. Romo 2014 was on par with any peak year Staubach or Aikman had.

However, longevity of that peak puts Staubach and Aikman above Romo.

Staubach was peak since Day One until he retired. Aikman was peak for half decade. Romo was mistake-prone gunslinger early in career and finally hit peak in his one and only 2014. In 2011-2013, Romo was still having his inexplicable WTF games that he eliminated in 2014.

Not all on him, of course (Garrett clammed up in the playoffs).
Postseason success matters for QBs, though, and can't be ignored.
Unfortunately, when that gets mentioned, many are quick to throw out the dreaded "Romo hate!!!!" line.
 
I wonder how many people actually saw players like Staubach or Morton or even Meredith play or if they are just going off what they see on highlight reels. It’s one thing to watch an entire game or just see the high spots someone put together.
