Let Jones go.

I think he's a solid player and better than what some people give him credit for, but he isn't much of a playmaker and he's going to command a fortune.

I'd focus on Cooper, Quinn, and Cobb in that order.

Cooper will command a lot but he's young and very very good. I think the road problems have a lot to do with how drastic the change in philosophy was between home/road games under Garrett.

Quinn was very very good and easily the best and most consistent pass rusher. I doubt he'll command a ton of money. I'm guessing you could probably bring him back on a 2 year deal at 6-7 mill per. If Lawrence bounces back, and I think he will, this will make for a fine pass rushing duo. Couple that with a difference-making NT for once, and I think we'll have our must disruptive D-line since 2009.

And finally, Cobb was a stud. He would've performed even better with more seasoned offensive coaching. With McCarthy coming in, I think there's an excellent chance he'll return and like Quinn, I don't see him commanding a ton.

After those 3, I'd focus on one all-star caliber player at either safety or NT, then find your other top contributors in the draft.

I'd let Byron go as well. I'm with you, I don't dislike the guy as a starting corner. But I'm not paying elite starter money for him. Not when you can get other guys for elite starter money at DE or DT potentially. It's hard to say who will be available at this point for free agency. A guy like Chris Jones would be stellar at DT but I seriously doubt the Chiefs let him walk. Same with Yannick Ngakoue. Same with Arik Armstead.

But if you're paying that kind of money to a player, shouldn't it be someone like those names and then get a decent corner as opposed to the other way around?

What if in exchange for letting him hit free agency you get to sign an equally big free agent D-lineman. And then you use the pick on a corner in the draft? Just a hypothetical. You're really only wanting to keep him because you know Dallas won't do shit in free agency. So you'd rather keep the guy and hope to add something somewhere else in the draft. As opposed to letting him walk and treading water by drafting a new corner. Which I get. I just hope McCarthy and Nolan can convince Jerry to open the purse strings in free agency a little.

I'm good with that.

Like I said, my only gripe with the guy is that he doesn't have a playmaking bone in his body. So if he can be brought back at a price that doesn't kill us, I'm good with that.

TBF, the only CB to make any plays on the ball whatsoever in the Garrett era was 2012 Brandon Carr but they quickly coached it out of him.

Maybe a guy like Jones can be coached to locate the ball and use his instincts better?

I'm hoping Nolan's propensity for having defenses that get picks will result in us finally having a secondary that actually jumps routes and gets their hands on footballs.
 
If we're gonna splurge on anyone in FA it needs to be a NT or S.

We haven't had a difference-maker at either position in what seems like ages. And to no surprise, our run defense and lack of plays in the secondary has been a problem for almost the entirety of the Garrett era.

I really hope Nolan values those positions much more than the Garrett-era Cowboys did.

I would let him walk. I'm not overpaying corners. We're already going to sink a shit ton into Dak and Cooper.
 
Let Cooper walk. McCarthy has gotten it done with a bevy of anonymous receivers not on Cooper's level.

That would be dumb.

There was a clear increase in production in the Dallas Cowboys' offense once Cooper arrived in the middle of 2018, and he finished the 2019 regular season with the No. 7 overall grade among receivers (84.1). Cooper set a career-high with 503 yards on deep (20-plus yard) passes, third highest in the league, and he caught them at an efficient rate of 62.5% (tied for fifth). The Cowboys’ passing offense has been one of the league’s best with Cooper on the field, netting 122.0 EPA on his 907 plays compared to just 2.95 EPA on 425 plays without him. That massive difference is the best explanation for quarterback Dak Prescott’s increase in production and Cooper’s spot atop the offensive free agent list.

Yes, well, Dak is gonna get paid and now we have to start saving our pennies. You can find a reasonable facsimile of Cooper for a fraction of the price. Certainly easier than finding a true cornerback. Witten retiring and replacing him with someone who can actually run will also help Dak's numbers.

You aren’t finding a WR for a “fraction of the cost” with his route running ability.
 
I think Amari Cooper is an elite player and those types of guys don't grow on trees.

He may drop a few passes here and there and his road woes have not gone unnoticed, but I think that with better offensive coaching this is a guy who can reach 1400 yards and 12+ TDs, and that sort of production is very difficult to find.

Pay the man.

And then besides DT/S, we also need a LB in draft or FA. I don't trust that LVE's gonna be ok.
