In fairness, "he didn't fit the scheme" is sometimes a big deal and could lead to all those other things (other than being out of shape, which could also lead to those other things). It's worth a flyer. We're certainly desperate enough.

They were running a 3-4 the year they drafted him, he had a very solid rookie year then got hurt and fell by the wayside as they switched schemes in 2019.

He was a legitimate 2nd/3rd round talent who played well as a rookie and then missed a year and fell out of favor, maybe he's no longer there physically after whatever the injury was, who knows, but ultimately you aren't going to get much more upside than that with a signing like this in the middle of a season.

God I hope this is true. They've been supportive of him publicly and saying there's nothing to see here. But schlubs like us see it, so it's hard to believe professional coaches don't. Honestly, what else can they say publicly? I just hope their eyes are wide open behind the scenes.
like Jerry said, he's a cornerstone.

I'm certain that McCarthy and Nolan see it. Just wonder if they can convince Jerry and Stephen to actually do something about it.

To me Jaylon Smith is way more of a cut candidate than Elliott.

With Elliott we'd barely be saving any money in 2021 or 2022 because we'd have to split the hit over two years. With Smith you basically take a net even hit in 2021 and then you're free and clear after that, clearing out $11.8 million against the cap in 2022.

And then of course there's the fact that Elliott has generally been an elite player over multiple years and seems the much better bet to actually get somewhere near that level again, whereas Smith had one good year and has been inconsistent at best and terrible at the worst otherwise.

Look at Diggs' pass deflections numbers. Looks like he by far has the best ball awareness among the DBs.

I'm going to see if I can find the number of times each DB has been thrown at to see if this is just the result of offenses trying to pick on the rookie.

Not only that, but the only other DB even on the list is Awuzie, who hasn't even played since week 2.

The rest of the DBs have been a clown show.

Perhaps we do miss Byron Jones. :unsure

I don't think the CB's have been too bad in general, it's mostly been the safeties, and Darian Thompson most egregiously. Since Thompson was moved out of the lineup, and Worley for that matter, the pass defense has been much better.

Thompson's snap count went back up in the last game. :skurred

Just pulled the numbers for the Cowboys top 3 DBs (excluded Awuzie since he's missed so much time).

Diggs: 9 Games played; 66 targets; allowed 56% completion; 15.3 yards allowed per completion

Lewis: 8 Games played; 43 targets; allowed 60.5% completion; 8.2 yards allowed per completion

Brown: 6 Games played; 34 targets; allowed 58.8% completion; 10.2 yards allowed per completion

Diggs' yards per completion are much higher because teams take more shots down field against him. By a lot. The advanced analytics show that air yards and depth of target numbers for receivers Diggs covers are 2 and 3 times higher than the other Cowboys DBs.
