IMO the main bias is still toward "name" schools and programs. I think if OU and Texas were in the position TCU and Baylor found themselves in last year the committee would have gotten them in.

But it was actually FSU that didn't belong and everyone that thought OSU didn't belong were proven wrong.

It's actually amusing to see the SEC infatuation when what you describe is the case with all prominent conferences and schools.

But the SEC is the conference with a "record setting" number of teams in the top 25 to start a season.

So? Right now there are 7 Pac 12 teams and 5 SEC teams in the top 25. Even though there were a record number of SEC teams to begin the year ranked, they aren't all there now. And the SEC teams who have dropped out of the rankings hasn't benefited other SEC teams since most of the games to this point have been non-conference matchups.

I really don't see what all the complaining is about.

When it comes to the SEC, he likes the complain just for the sake of doing so. Nobody with any sense cares about rankings in week 3 except for when they need something to bitch about.

Because it shows the bias and clearly explains why the SEC will always have a team in the college playoffs. Which is fine.

So it shows bias in the meaningless polls that have no real effect on the season's final outcome. Who cares?

And if it were truly fine, you wouldn't be complaining about it each week and each year.

They do though, which is what you don't seem to comprehend. It all goes into a teams resume. If you start near the top it's a lot easier to finish near the top then if you start near the bottom. Especially if all the teams you're playing are ranked initially. Because they will all be higher in the rankings then the teams that have the same record who weren't ranked initially.

Auburn went the NC game 2 years after starting the year unranked. If a team puts up a great season, they will be recognized. If multiple teams do it, than the ones who pad their schedules with cupcakes (Baylor and TCU) will be left out.

You mean like the SEC teams who pad their out of conference schedules with FCS teams and use the excuse that their in conference schedule is super tough (since they played so many ranked teams in the SEC )?

Auburn plays in the SEC, which is kind of the point that is being made. When you put a bunch of SEC teams at the top of the rankings to start the season. Even if it is totally undeserved, what happens is even when a crappy SEC team starts winning, their strength of schedule looks ungodly because all the SEC teams they are playing are "ranked highly" when they play them. The SEC isn't playing some murderers row outside of their conference schedule. And just like we saw this year a lot of those non conference games caused serious problems for the SEC.

It's why the early rankings matter way more then people give credit or realize. It's why I don't understand why SEC teams who were bad last year somehow started this season ranked highly in the rankings.

I agree with this point. I said it last year. If that were Texas and Oklahoma instead of Baylor and TCU I guarantee one of the Big XII schools would have made the playoffs. No doubt about it.

The committee will deny it but popularity, prejudice, and perception play a role in the decision making process.

That's true to an extent. Ohio State made the playoffs last year because they are Ohio State. If Northwestern had gone through the Big Ten with the same record there isn't a chance in hell they make the playoffs.

TCU actually plays a respectable non-conference schedule. Unlike Baylor, they aren't afraid to schedule competitive non-conference games. Off the top of my head I know they've played Virginia, LSU, and Oregon St. in recent years.

For some reason Baylor is hesitant to schedule those types of games. When people challenge them on it their excuse is always "These schedules were put together 5 years ago". However if you look at their future schedule they haven't made much of an effort to improve their SOS. I think they finally play a game against Duke in 2021 I believe, and that's their toughest non-conference game for the foreseeable future.

So if Baylor keeps getting passed over for playoff spots they'll have no one to blame but themselves.

TCU should've been in last year. Point is the weak link was FSU, not the SEC or Big 10 team. Goes back to the premise that the name schools from the name conferences get the benefit of the doubt. This isn't exclusively and SEC issue.

I'm of the opinion that the lack of a conference championship game was a convenient excuse.

Even without that title game I don't think Ohio State jumps Oklahoma or Texas.

If they played in the SEC they would have played a tougher schedule and belonged in.

The Big 12 was down last year that's why they did not get in.

I know TCU is trying. Sometime in the next year or two they have schedules Ohio state in home and homes is what I remember reading.
