So you're going on record and saying Gurley will be as good as those guys?

And I really doubt anybody knew they were going to be as good as they turned out. Or they just might have been drafted higher than they actually were.

Even so, I still don't take a RB in the first. Finish building the lines first. We have a running back right now that is producing at an all timer pace. Yet the first thing that comes to mind for anybody with a brain is our porous defense and near non existent Dline. Of those three guys you mentioned above, only one of them won championships. The one with a complete team around him.

Depends on how the team grades him out. If he's graded with an elite grade and the other people available at our pick are borderline 1st or even 2nd round grades at the DL, I'm not passing on the talent. We can throw numbers at the DL in rounds 2+ and still do well.

The only way I take someone over him is if their grade is similar because that's where need comes in.
 
I would take an AP or Barry/Emmitt type if I have a complete team and just need that RB to finish it up. Our team? No damn way. I stick with the trenches and ride Murray as long as I can.

Now it is seen simply as a tool to get a career. Kids go in with dreams that the piece of paper will magically make their life successful. That is simple not true. What our society lacks is grit. It is sad to see the expectations that young people have to the point they feel they were done wrong if they aren't successful. That is completely backwards thinking.

I would never hire an idealistic young college graduate. I'd rather hire someone that has some will, common sense and drive. Most young graduates don't have that.

If you tried to sell a degree, straight up, to a grown person for the current going rate of getting one, they'd laugh you out of the building. The only way they can pawn their useless pieces of paper off on someone is by picking on dumb kids like I was. I just got off my third 16 hour shift in a row at a prison. I'm not underemployed because I lack "grit" it's because I didn't know the difference between a marketable degree and a worthless one when I was 18. If I could go back and go through the nursing program instead I'd be making bank right now.

Choosing a worthless degree is my mistake, but why is a publicly funded institution offering worthless degrees that have no positive impact on society? Why is my tax money going to support academic welfare for sociology professors and their ilk in liberal arts? I have no problem with private colleges, BTW. I think public universities are parasites with the sole exception of their hard science (including engineering and computer science) and medical programs.

I thought about this while I was at work. If I was any 4 or 5 star kid I'd take the second option. You want me to come to your school. Open auction. Whoever bids most for my first signed autographed picture gets me to sign with their alma mater. I'm betting top recruits would start getting 5 figure signing bonuses from boosters.

I'm really not trying to be a dick but you had at least 4 years to figure out you couldn't get a job with your degree. There are still great options for you in life. Don't blame anyone, fix your own situation. Nobody can live your life for you.

I didn't even get a degree until after my career was going well. I'm still going to school because I enjoy it.

There is good money to be made right in your back yard but you don't wants work in the oilfield I guess. If not, there is no shame in doing what you are doing. Do it well and get promoted.

I didn't really have 4 years to work it out, changing your major when your academic scholarship is set up for you to graduate on time isn't that easy. The best I could do once I figured it out was do major coursework in criminal justice to try to make it into an actual career field. That turned out to be another mistake because law enforcement in Texas doesn't require any education and it's no competitive advantage getting hired. I went for alternative certification after that and taught High School for 3 years until Rick Perry cut school funding in 2010 and I ended up unemployed along with thousands of other Texas Teachers. After 2 years working security at night and applying for teaching jobs during the day I realized it would be impossible to keep my certificate from lapsing (not enough time to get with a district and catch up on back training). So I went back to the prison system (which had been my first job out of college) because I needed a steady job and benefits that the State could provide that private rent-a-cop work didn't. Now I'm applying for probation and parole jobs and hopefully, someday, they'll pick me up. I'm only telling you all this because you're accusing me of having sat on my ass for the last ten years never trying to improve my circumstances. That's not only judgemental, it's not fucking true.

I have some medical problems that make the oil field impractical, and in any case I'll still choose to make less money instead of always being away from my wife. I still tell everyone I meet who is interested in school how little bang you get for your college buck and how much more money they would make if they just drove a truck or became a plumber, electrician or oil field worker. I hope some of that information gets to kids before they go 40 grand in the hole (I am only 5 grand down thanks to my scholarship) and never get any of that money back.

My bad for coming off as a real jerk. I honestly am not accusing you of being lazy. You have a tough job and my hat is off to you.

It's all good. I can respect whatever reason you have for what you do. Like I said, you have a hard and stressful job, so you got nothing but respect from me. All I am saying is if you don't like your situation change it. Everybody has challenges. It seems like you are blaming the education system for stuff. That comes off as a little annoying to someone like me. My parents were drug dealers, I grew up addicted myself, spent most of my youth locked up, went to prison at 17, (safe P, but still) only went to the 8th grade and all sorts of stuff. That is the one sentence version. I found a way to be happy with my life. I'm not blaming anyone for any part of my life. Nobody screwed me. I made all of my choices. I've starred businesses and failed, has great jobs, got a few degrees and now my business is doing well. Of it folded tomorrow I would start over and do something else.

I'm working on improving things and moving forward, but I experience stress and frustration along the way, also I'm a very critical person and when I see a problem with something, I criticize it. This is a pretty critical place full of some frustrated people (who would have ever thought Cowboys fans would be frustrated) So it's my favorite place to vent. When I go on a full blown rant on FB people get all concerned and ask if I'm ok. Here I can get poop jokes from Carp, sermons from you, hipster political activism from Bipo, endless pedantic arguments from Schmitty, internet tough guy posturing from NoDak, and whatever comes out of the magic 8 ball that iamtdg uses for a head. :art

Seriously though, it's pretty awesome.
 
I have no idea how we've kept this game close.
 
Charlie Strong has fixed this defense in less than a season. I can't wait till the offense gets some players.
