148 yards rushing and three TDs in the first half. Oh, one of them was of the short field variety? Well, they gave up a 15-play scoring drive in the third when the game was still within reach at 21-7. Bosa, aside from the near safety on Hurts, was silenced. Then there were the sloppy, undisciplined penalties when they needed to get off the field before halftime. Fortunately for Ryans, it won't cost him a HC job.

They had 148 yards rushing the whole game and averaged under 4 YPC, literally nothing they did was impressive offensively aside from cashing in their short fields for TD's instead of FG's.

If SF has Purdy and the game was close Hurts almost certainly would've turned it over a time or two as he would've been forced to take more chances.

And yet the other two teams that played yesterday who could've easily won if not for Purdy's injury and the ridiculous personal foul on Cincinnati have two of the highest paid RB's in the league.

Christian McCaffrey played in 2 games in 2020, 7 games last year, and yes, every game this year but how much you wanna bet he misses multiple games next year? They made a good trade and it worked out for them to a degree but it was definitely a roll of the dice.

Edit: His cap hit for '23 is 19.5 million.

Joe Mixon? He had 814 yards this year. His contract was 4 years/48 mill. Does that sound like good return?

My point is more that being obtuse about the RB position based on what is more or less a trope is stupid and completely lacking in nuance.

Sure, Mixon wasn't great this year, but he was really good last year and they damn near won the Super Bowl, what would that have looked like if they were starting Perine and some 4th rounder? We'll see on McCaffrey but he was the engine of their offense this year.

In fact most of the extensions handed out to RB's recently have actually ended up decent with Henry, Cook, Chubb, Aaron Jones and Kamara all mostly living up to the money they got (roughly $12ish/year).

Every situation is different, the problem is that we handed an even bigger extension to a guy who we ran into the ground for 3 years as opposed to guys like Cook, Jones, Kamara and so forth who had lighter loads earlier in their career.

That's why I don't mind re-signing Pollard for around 8-9/year on a 3-4 year deal assuming he's on track to be 100%. His usage has been light and he's never going to be a bell cow 20 carry per game guy, he's always going to be paired with someone bigger and more physical, so he's more of an all-around weapon like Kamara.

Generally speaking you should avoid investing too much at RB but the idea that you should NEVER EVER EVER EVER give a RB an extension or take one with a high pick shows a lack of critical thinking and nuance.

Henry averaged 200 carries his first 4 years in the league so he didnt have as much mileage, Kamara ran for less than 900 and is on a 5 year/75 mill deal. Dalvin Cook 1173 yards which is kinda meh for 17 games, 5 years 63 million. Chubb was an exceptional signing especially for his production.
All I'm saying is I'll bet they'll all experience buyer's remorse at some point during these 2nd contracts. I feel all those resources are better invested in the o line. When your o line is elite, all of your skill players perform better.
I'm tired of over-paying and getting shitty returns on a bad investment.

With Kamara you can't just look at his rushing totals though since he's more or less a hybrid RB/WR, but since the contract he's consistently put up 1300+ yards a year even though their offense overall has deteriorated.

I generally agree that resources should be directed elsewhere, and particularly to the lines, but there is an extension for someone like Pollard that would make sense. Ideally it's short and in that $8-9/year range, as opposed to Elliott's which was ridiculously long on top of being at the top of the market.

Yet another bargain late FA signing, but damn if he hasn't turned into one of my favorite Cowboys.

I remember in an interview not long after he initially signed, he said Dan Quinn was very clear about what his responsibilities would be and he would expect no more. No doubt he exceeded those expectations.

So I guess that's news to me that Romo watched a bunch of tape and made that pick?

Was that common knowledge? Or is Sturm overstating here?

I don’t think Romo had much to do with it. I do recall Garrett pouting like a baby when they passed on Eifert.

Romo, or Garrett, doesn't matter to me. Let the scouts and Will McClay handle the draft. The fuckups always seem to be some pet cat of the coaches or players. Wright for example, stupid pet cat of Quinn. Trysten Hill, stupid pet cat of Marinelli. Coaches coach, but let the guys whose year long job is to study prospects make these decisions and not someone who has watched a few guys and fallen in love with one.

And Dak loved Tolbert.

Maybe we should stop doing that.
Trading away Cooper and the uber shitty handling of any FA signed or receiver drafted to help fill the void, are the very reason for us not being able to move past the 9ers. After CeeDee, we basically had fuck all for pass catchers.

2013 was the last draft before McClay and Stephen to an extent consolidated power over the draft room.

We do tend to remember the mistakes. But what about the ones that might work out, like Sam Williams?

Quinn does have the long arm fetish, no doubt.

But whiffing on Wright is hardly equivalent to Trysten Hill.
