Cowboys Nostalgia Thread

Yep, zipping through that game is pretty fun. The O can't score a TD in the first half... Madden zooming in on Troy's bad finger which I thought was going to be the index finger that's bent at like a 30* angle but instead it's his fingernail he got smashed and drilled through (my grandpa did the same thing to mine with his pocket knife, good times)... Curvin Richards getting some snaps before he fell asleep... The Washington hit (as NoDak mentioned) that today would get him suspended but back then nobody batted an eye ... Totally forgot about Kent Graham, he did have a big arm and made a few nice throws... And how good an athlete was Chad Hennings, a DT making a tackle on a kickoff at the 13?
Lett was pretty monstrous too. That 8 man line rotation was something to see.

Tony Hill was infinitely better than Dez Bryant could ever hope to be.

He was very very consistent with what he was asked to do.

He was not some trick shot artist who basically had his on and off days depending on who got into his head that particular Sunday.
Didn’t we have Pearson, Hill and Johnson together for some period of time ?

Jesus. At 7:16, if this was today's game, James Washington would be arrested for attempted murder.

Not even a flag then.

Yup, I thought the same exact thing.

The sad thing is, it's a perfectly legal hit too but the NFL wants to remove the violence from a violent sport so it's a flag and a fine in today's game.

Deebo got absolutely hammered in the NFC Champ Game and they picked up the flag, so it's hit and miss.

13:29. Forget the rushing stats. Forget the TDs. Forget the receiving stats.

This blitz pickup, along with all the rest, is why I will argue that Emmitt was the best all around running back ever. Leveled the blitzer coming thru, then goes back and blocks him AGAIN, allowing Aikman to step up into the pocket, then take off for an 8 yard gain. He did everything at a high level. Beautiful.

Yup.

Most complete running back ever.

I think as generally underrated as he is, the two areas where he was vastly underrated were his abilities as a receiver out of the backfield and his agility.

He wasn't Barry Sanders, but man could he make guys look silly and he did so on that TD reception in that Giants game.

Also, I believe his performance in the 92 NFCC vs the 49ers is one of the all time great performances on that stage and yet it never really gets talked about.

Over 100 yards rushing, 1 rushing TD and 1 receiving TD, and the most important player on the 9 minute drive that essentially put them in the driver's seat for good.

On that drive, he makes 3 receptions, all for 10-plus yards where he does ALL the work after the catch with none bigger than the spin in between Romanowski and Mike Walter and leaves them both in the dust to convert on a huge 3rd down.

Then he follows that up with a reception in the flat where he jukes the hell out of Dave Whitmore and gets another 6 yards to pick up another first down.

Then the guy catches a ball on 3rd and 6 and goes 15 yards for the score.

He was the greatest big game runningback of all time and it's criminal that he's so underrated and viewed as just a numbers and longevity guy by so many morons.

Absolutely.

"Emmitt only has those numbers because of his Oline, Aikman, and Irvin."

Yet, when talking about them individually, they are all cut down and said to not be nearly as great as people think. But when used in the Emmitt argument, they are suddenly all world, carrying Emmitt to those numbers. Well? Which is it?

Strangely enough that Oline, Aikman, and Irvin couldn't make other RBs do the things Emmitt done. Just ask Charles Haley.

The only bummer was getting stuffed on 4th and 1 in the 4thQ. I really wanted Jimmy to kick the FG, but Elliott was a head case.

Yup.

Funny how that works right?

All of those guys are all overrated until it comes time to judge them individually. Then they all were fortunate to benefit from the others.

:lol

Funny how so many average players accomplished so much together.

Just to reiterate Emmitt's big game status, here are his numbers from the 4 conference championship games he played in:

92: 114 yards 1 TD, 59 receiving yards and 1 TD
93: 88 yards 1 TD, 85 receiving yards 1 TD
94: 74 yards 2 TD, 5 receiving yards
95: 150 rushing yards 3 TD, 17 yards receiving

He scored 9 TDs in 4 conference championship games with over 400 yards rushing and 166 yards receiving.

:lol

That's fucking ridiculous.

Keep in mind that he played the one in 93 with a bum shoulder and in 94 he was probably at 70% at best with the pulled hammy.

And this doesn't even include his other big playoff games or his multiple 100 yard rushing efforts in Super Bowls or the separated shoulder game to win homefield.

No RB, hell....damn near no other player in history sans Brady and maybe Jerry Rice have that sort of big game legacy.

But yeah, tell me the how the guy is overrated.

I know you aren't Dez's biggest fan, but looking back I've changed my mind and do agree Hill was better than Dez.

Dez was an athletic freak for sure and could and did dominate many games, but Hill would produce whether he was part of a trio of WRs or all by himself, he'd do it game in game out, and most importantly he was a total pro about it.

I got mad at him for not getting out of bounds on the last play vs Atlanta in 1986, but I got mad at Dez lots more often.

Hill's tip-toe down the sideline TD vs Pittsburgh in the Superbowl was awesome.

Amari Cooper is a lot like Tony Hill was. Wouldn't it be amazing to see him get his shot at one too? (In Dallas)

Dominant performances (100 yard games):
Hill: 28 games 18-10 record
Cooper: 26 games 17-9 record
Bryant: 18 games 10-9 record

Dez was a TD machine for sure (75 TDs in 12 seasons), but Hill was OK there himself (51 in 10 seasons). Similar to Hill, Cooper has 46 in 10 seasons.

Amari Cooper is a lot like Tony Hill was.

He could be. With a good QB, which Hill enjoyed between Staubach and White, sure.

I have a very different opinion than what the organization is painting. I don't give a flying fuck if Jerry is pissed about the COVID thing with Amari.

The real problem was the QB. But it is always nice to have the "well, you can't keep everyone" excuse delivered with a fucking hillbilly accent.

Bryant was a circus freak that lived off the fade pass.

The Thrill was a real WR.

I don't know if the problem was Dak but we needed to throw more to Cooper. He still always made clutch catches. But it's ok to feed Cooper and I think Dak got a little preoccupied with throwing the ball all over. Sometimes when you have an elite guy you just need to sort of let them abuse dudes.

Is there a more heated fan debate in football than Barry vs Emmitt?

I think outside of that, Emmitt also benefited from being in the right place at the right time. He looked like he was ready made to be on the field with Aikman Irvin and that OL.
I always thought the same thing about Jerry Rice. He was made to play with the players he excelled with on the Niners.
Doesn’t take away from their greatness but I’ve always believed in that “right time, right place” situation.

Same with Joe Montana, Tom Brady, and even Patrick Mahomes

I always thought Sanders was a better pure rushing RB while Emmitt was a better all around football RB.
Sanders was electric with the ball, Emmitt more working man-like.
