Too many people are ignorant to the beauty of the free market & too trusting of government to understand the implications of this.
There's a great show called
Commanding Heights that showcases what happened in Poland after the USSR fell and Poland went from a state controlled market to a free market. Under the state controlled market, supplies were short and prices were high. Then the government gets out of the way and prices drop and supplies rise as this guy says rather eloquently:

One of the leaders of the new independent Polish government decided to do shock therapy by removing government controls and let the market do its magic but wasn't sure how to tell if it was working so they focused on the price of eggs. In short order, farmers who no longer had to sell their eggs at a set price to the government brought their eggs to markets that were set up on the streets. It wasn't long before there was an abundance of eggs at prices far lower than the price controlled by the government. Its discussed at the 1:05 mark here:
