It's interesting because either Dak is being completely greedy (if he's asking for 37-38+) or Stephen is being a complete moron (if he's unwilling to budge on 4 vs. 5 years, and presuming 4/140ish would get it done).

There's not a whole lot of middle ground.

Those two positions are not mutually exclusive.

He is just going to get more expensive next year. Either the more expensive tag or the market getting more expensive. It makes zero sense to not go ahead and do the 4 years and keep his yearly average as low as you can.

Yea, the only way it makes some semblance of sense is that they (McCarthy specifically) would rather see him prove it on the field for another 16 games and think paying him more a year from now is worth it.

If they were to give him a 4 year deal averaging 38.5 next year the AAV, if you include the 31 on the tag this year, would be 37 over 5 years.

That's not that big a difference from a 4 year deal averaging 35 this year, but that's only if McCarthy is hell bent on seeing him prove it in his system.

That's quite literally the only scenario that makes sense unless the organization truly doubts that he's the long-term solution.

That 5th year would save them $5M per year... money that could be spent on other talent.

Considering that the team has thrown $1-2 million at scrubs like Olawale, CJ Goodwin, Maurice Canady, etc. this offseason, and that they're seemingly happy to let Tyrone Crawford eat up $9 million in cap space for no good reason I'd argue that $5 million in the context of securing what is supposedly your long-term franchise QB is "no reason".

At this point it seems to be somewhat emotion-driven and a case of hurt feelings on one side or the other, there's very little logic involved seemingly.

But maybe a primary question can be answered this season to address whether Dak is the long term solution. I have said for sometime that I think Jones wants to see how he will operate under the current coach.

He signed the tag and it is enforceable. I don't think the games have to be played at all for that to be in effect.

They're going to end up looking real stupid if their plan is to basically stall and hope Dak is willing to take 5 years. There's absolutely no reason for him to do that, all I hope for is that they keep an open mind to trading him for the opportunity arises.
