2026 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread...

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said on @1053thefan that DC Christian Parker “did a great job really walking through how (Joey Porter Jr.) would change us, how we could play bully ball in the boundary and that would only help (DaRon Bland) because we could leave him on the outside and use his ball skills and play-making ability.”

Jones said they did not have any contract talks with Porter’s agents about an extension. “They understood the deal in Dallas would be to come in here and play under his contract.”

Jones explaining some of the trade details (Porter in exchange for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick): “We also had to have the trade make sense if Joey left after this year. That’s why the (second-round pick in 2028) matches up with if he did leave, the compensatory pick we’d probably get a (third or a fourth) for him and get that back in 2028 when that (second-round pick) is in play.

“It made a lot of sense. It protected us. But the bigger thing is what Joey can do for our team. That’s the biggest thing. We hadn’t totally checked that box in our mind when the season started. We had Bland, but we really thought we needed another corner.

“And it’s always the chicken-and-the-egg in terms of getting pressure (up front) and getting sacks versus covering them (on the back end). If you can cover them another half second then a lot of times the pass rusher gets home. If you don’t, then they don’t get home.

“We understand that a lot of people feel like we need to get more pressure on the defensive side, but the pressure starts to come when you cover them well.”

So does Brady honestly.

In fact the state of league announcers is terrible right now. They are all so bland.

Buck and Aikman were the gold standard of the past two decades.

I don’t even consider Fox to have a #1 play by play guy right now. They have a #2 masquerading as a #1.

It's because announcers used to be able to be critical of the refs, the rules/processes the league has implemented, coaches, and so forth, now I'm almost certain that the league regulates the sort of comments you get from announcers and what you're left with is a very bland, vanilla, and at times pseudo cheerleading type of commentary.

Will any DBs be back for Thursday? Porter full time hopefully.

Locke and Thompson still out. Revel? Durant?

If they are I don’t see how you don’t play Downs at legit safety.

Revel was back this game. Durant is not likely, I don't think. And, as bbgun said, Locke and Thompson definitely won't be back.

Everyone kept saying the defense only needed to be average. Instead it’s still among the very worst

Parker’s not exactly gotten off to a flying start. That’s the number one issue.

You're not wrong but I will say that it was at least average in the second half yesterday and that was a big reason we won. So we're seeing some glimpses, hopefully it continues.

But yeah the jury is still out on Saint Parker.

Yeah to start the game I was about ready to throw Parker in the trash. I'm ok with completions against contested catches. But when guys are wide open it drives me nuts. The second half we at least appeared to be playing much tighter. Texans were having to dive for the ball to make catches.

It's obvious there are a couple of real problem players on defense. It can be Bell, it can be Steward but we feel like we just need one more person to get healthy on defense in the secondary. Until then those guys are getting picked on and picked apart.

The other problem is Winters. Who plays with zero physicality. Which I came in expecting but I also expected him to be fast for a LBer. The guy just looks slow to me. I'll take whatever I can from Overshown until he gets hurt again, as long as it means Winters plays way less.

Anyway, no one has perfect talent on defense. It's up to Parker to figure out how to work with these weaknesses. Or bench them.
