So why do we need challenges anymore?
Because refs are still human, dumb, and corrupt. I don't give a shit if they review plays while the huddle is happening as long as there is zero delay. But, to imply that a timeout shouldn't be on the line (which is what that headline implies) is dumb. No offense.

Why should a time out be on the line just because you want them to get a call right?

Because it would be abused and there would be a ton more disruptions of play if there is no consequence for the coach getting it wrong.

Well it's not on the line if your challenge is upheld, at least not the first one.

But if it's a close call and you're not 100% sure and the network isn't showing a good angle on replay but it's a key play...you just don't want to get screwed so you have to decide whether it's worth risking it or not.

Sure if you're right it's fine but it's not always clear if you're going to be right.

It's not abused if it comes from the league office not from the teams, and they can do it so quickly to the point where there's virtually no disruption. They're already doing it with replay assist.

And, you have to risk the timeout to find out. Otherwise, every other play is going to be a play where the coach is not 100% sure and you will have ungodly amount of challenges. It's a silly idea.

And, I said I was fine with that as long as it doesn't disrupt the game. But, coaches' challenges need to have a TO consequence if you're wrong or we will have a ton more reviews that do disrupt the game.

Why would there be an 'ungodly amount of challenges'? Give them a set amount. When they are out of challenges, they are out. There are no more.

If they choose to use their challenges in the first half on those questionable calls that wouldn't move the game needle much vs that deep pass interference call late in the 4th, that's on them.

But I'm talking about doing away with coaches challenges entirely.

I would be fine with that, too.

This has never been said before, but we should've listened to Cotton.

I don't think you should completely eliminate them. I do think they serve a purpose, but there should either be a risk (TO loss) or I would be fine with what NoDak suggested and not make them use a TO but they still only get 2. I would even be fine with them keeping the challenge in their pocket if they win the challenge. So, if they have 2 and win the challenge they keep the 2. But, if you lose it, you are down to 1, etc.
