2026 Cowboys Cuts/Signings/Practice Squad Thread...

The Fan has some Pittsburgh local media guy on and he said Broderick Jones couldn't lift weights and lost a ton of weight and strength. Said he doubted Jones even weighed 300 lbs now.

I am too. IF it wasn't for other guys having great preseason's I actually liked what I saw from Anthony Smith. And I think if he works hard he could become a pretty good WR. Deep speed is always desired. He showed me better hands and route running than I was expecting. I think a year of perfecting his craft and he may be able to make a legit run at an NFL roster spot. Practice squad is perfect for him.

So it was all just luck?

If anyone knew, we should have. We drafted him from a small school, knew he was talented but raw, developed him, he was good on special teams... everything was on track. So I still say it was dumb to release him.

I mean I remember last year bitching that he was better than Tolbert, he just didn't have the stats to back it up yet. I certainly saw it.

But I don't think other NFL teams are really paying that close of attention to WR 6, 7 and 8 on all 31 other teams. Lots of guys slip through the cracks. There are only 3 preseason games to watch. Teams aren't reading every Cowboys blog to hear about how guys are performing at practice.
 
I actually do think Milton earned a spot on the 53, and would have kept him there as the third QB. They don’t need the like 8 safeties they kept.

But Howell is the #2. They must have been comfortable exposing Milton to waivers. Better than the opposite.

Agreed. He can take Mingo’s or Turpin’s spot next year.

Yeah Broaddus and his cronnies are going with he asked for his release and the Cowboys just granted it. Hopefully they are full of shit like they normally are. Because that would be a terrible decision in my opinion.

It is weird that Schotty went from, both guys are still competing for #2, to Milton is cut.
 
I’m glad we got the DT Dunn on the practice squad. He looks like he has some potential.

FRISCO, Texas -- Sam Howell will be the Dallas Cowboys' backup quarterback to Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys waived quarterback Joe Milton III on Monday to make room for running back Emari Demercado, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to a source, the Cowboys did have some trade conversations regarding Milton before the cut down to the 53-man roster on Sunday. If Milton clears waivers, he could be brought back to the practice squad, but it's not clear whether the Cowboys would bring him back.

Speaking after the Demercado move was official but before the club's decision to release Milton, Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer said the competition between Milton and Howell would continue.

"We're still piecing the puzzle together, and that's where this thing is very fluid," Schottenheimer said.

Howell signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million guaranteed as a free agent. He had a productive preseason too, completing 27 of 40 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also ran for a score.

If the Cowboys released Howell, they would still be on the hook for his $2 million base salary; and if he had been brought back to the practice squad, that money would have counted in addition to his guaranteed money.

One edge for Howell was experience. He has 18 career starts, all with the Washington Commanders in 2022 and 2023. Milton has played in five games across his two campaigns with no starts.
 
Listening to Schottenheimer talk about Jones in the PC was very interesting.

After the trade I suspected that they gave up as much as they did because they thought he could potentially start at RT and not just be a swing tackle, and obviously that's the case, but I think it's unrealistic that he could start against the Giants in less than two weeks.

The big thing was that Schottenheimer said they're going to leave him at RT only, which makes me think that they want to give him some time to build his body back up, get used to playing RT in practice without flip flopping for at least a few weeks, and then maybe they'll pull the trigger on a move.

I think it's at least 50/50 that Jones starts at some point this year, and probably sooner than later unless Steele miraculously gets his shit together.
