Edge Defenders: Caden Curry, Colts (89.5) & Malachi Lawrence, Cowboys (80.2)

Cowboys edge defender Malachi Lawrence is the only first-round pick to make our Team of the Week. Despite entering the league as a somewhat raw prospect, he is off to an encouraging start. Lawrence played only 17 snaps but generated a pressure and added a defensive stop against the run.

Lawrence wasn't as bad as everyone is freaking out about, he just didn't look like a sure fire starter, which he never was expected to be to begin with.

Yeah nothing I saw was bad. He just didn't really do much to stand out.

I was given to understand that Arvelle Reese had a good debut, not sure why he wouldn't be on the list, but yes it's encouraging that the numbers speak well about Lawrence, because it did seem like he was being more quiet than we would have liked through the first few weeks.

I watched Reese highlights and didn't see much of anything, he was fine but nothing especially amazing.

I notice sometimes he has his inside leg forward in his stance, sometimes back. I assume this is just from his not being used to switching sides and still too much new stuff swimming in his head.

On another note, this is just me, but man I love seeing the 34 with three down and the two OLBs standing up like that.

I may have overreacted :)

Looking at his snaps again more closely it looks like he affected at least two if not three plays with pressure.

Even though he bounced off a back he was trying to tackle, he still penetrated and made early contact that helped the rest of the defense shut down the play.

I think I shouldn’t be comparing his get off to other first round LB edge types we’ve drafted like Micah or Ware. The preseason comparison with those two is unfair. Of course he’s not them and it’s ok, he was still effective in his debut overall.

I don't really remember what Ware looked like in his first preseason game.

In his second preseason game he started. He was fucking awesome. Wrought havoc up front, then dropped back into coverage and had a pick.

Sick, sick debut.

I hope Lawrence gets more opportunities in the next 2 preseason games. Let the kid play half the game at least. Let him get some work and see more of what he can do. Young guys need the experience. I'll never understand the extreme fear Dallas always has of preseason injuries. Especially with players that don't have much exposure to the NFL game atmosphere yet.

I think it was mostly Romo 2016.

And especially now with Miller, Lawrence is probably only slated for about 15 snaps a game barring injuries.

Romo was an injury waiting to happen. If it didn't happen in the preseason I still fully believe it would have happened in the regular season.
Maybe so. But we're talking about the way Jerry's brain thinks.
