Must See Movies

The Odyssey was ok.

The woke stuff was annoying and a distraction but their roles were minor enough that it didn’t derail the movie.

But I actually thought it was weird and too dark. The action didn’t land. I was never emotionally pulled in either.

The realization of the monsters was amazing looking. Sound production was fantastic, it will look and sound amazing on a home theater. It just… wasn’t moving in terms of storytelling.

It was fine. Not bad.

Not sure how people are putting it up there with Inception and the Prestige.

I'm also guessing that I'll fall asleep halfway through and never watch the whole thing. But that seems to happen to a lot of movies these days. Just not a movie I'm excited enough about to set aside a night to actually watch.

I was excited when I first heard about it because I'm such a fan of Nolan. But after learning they were going to inject wokeness into it, I immediately became disinterested.
 
I like Matt Walsh but he’s not really correct here about the conservative criticism being “entirely correct.” Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin both agreed it’s not really that egregious. Helen had about 30 seconds of screen time and 2 lines of dialogue. It’s fucking annoying but this isnt the movie Troy where she is a main focus. She’s barely seen at all. Why is Helen black when Homer describes her as white explicitly? Woke crap, but, it’s such a minor role it doesn’t matter.

You all know I’m on your side with all this. If it’s your position that you don’t want to spend any money on it because of zero tolerance for wokeness, fine, that’s completely fair, but you watching any Hollywood movie these days, is probably supporting and funding wokeism just as much as paying to see the Odyssey is.

I think it was Shapiro who said, and he makes some good points, that it’s actually a relatively conservative themed messaging overall, as far as Hollywood goes these days.

That being said I didn’t love the movie for other reasons, so Walsh is right that the movie is clunky otherwise. It’s not bad, but disjointed is not a bad description, and it’s just not an excellent movie but an ok one.

But Ellen Page playing a dude in the movie just wasn’t that big of a deal in it, honestly. Again, Page was in a total of like 3 scenes. It was immersion breaking, but, if the movie was otherwise great, it wouldn’t have ruined the experience. And again, I’m not pro trans at all. I’m not pro race swapping at all.

Those things were annoying and stupid… but you can find far more more offensive sentiment in so many other movies, even beloved movies, these days. Like, why would I give money to any other director who puts Anti American or Pro Socialist sentiment into their movies? That’s so many them anymore, and even if it’s not explicit you are funding that movement by funding Hollywood.

The theater I was in was completely full, not a single seat available. And I know because the seats I purchased were too close to the screen for my wife, and I could not find a single other pair of seats or even single seats in the theater for us/her to switch to.
