2026 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread...

This is basically what we'll be doing next year, the tweet is kind of misleading because the guy misinterpreted what the Eagles were doing with their personnel by counting DeJean as a pure CB, as opposed to the S/LB hybrid he actually is, which is exactly what the "big nickel" thing is all about.

So the Eagles would've been certainly top half of the league, if not top 5-10.

But the way the Seahawks used Emmanwori, the way the Texans used Pitre, and the way the Eagles used DeJean is almost exactly how we'll use Downs this year. I think Downs will play a bit more traditional, 2 high-type safety in base packages than Emmanwori or DeJean played last year (although DeJean is moving full-time to "safety" this year), but for the most part we're going to be in nickel with Downs functioning as a S/LB hybrid in the slot with Thompson and either Hooker or Locke playing more traditional safety roles.

The beauty of it is you can be in nickel with added coverage ability due to having the S/LB hybrid on the field, as opposed to a pure 3rd LB in base, but without sacrificing too much defending the run if the S/LB hybrid is effective supporting the run, which guys like Emmanwori, DeJean, Pitre and Downs are.

Would be nice if we could pull a Laurent Robinson out of our journeyman WR group. Pickens and Lamb are great obviously.

But I don't know how sold I am on Flournoy as the third WR. And Turpin, I'd prefer he just goes back to end-arounds and kick returns.

I don't think it will be Valdes-Scantling, he seems washed. Tyler Johnson, maybe, but just seems like a low end fourth or fifth guy. Jaden Smith and Anthony Smith are probably practice squad types.

Mingo or Denzel Mims taking an unlooked-for step up would be nice.

I would guess, and hope for, Anthony Smith or Holden out of that group. Not sure Holden is fast enough, but if he's good enough at everything else it's probably okay. Would be great to hit on Smith but I'm not sure he looked as fast as 4.40 in the highlights I saw, plus he had the drops in college.

Notes:

Charles Snowden was cut because he was suspended. Maybe they will do some maneuvering to have him make the team, but then be placed on the suspended list, then re-sign someone they cut.

My last cut was down to Luke Schoonmaker vs. Marist Liufau. I cut Liufau.

I would trade both of them frankly, and look for picks in return, and then with my freed up roster spot, hunt for other teams' cuts. I'd also consider keeping Liufau over Curtis Robinson, or Shemar James if he doesn't show enough improvement. And of course if Sam Williams doesn't look like he translates into the 3-4, he can be the one booted out as well.

Keep in mind that Laurent Robinson was our WR2 for a good chunk of the that year he was here, if Flournoy was that I bet he'd put up similar stats given that he had two 100 yard games last year when Lamb was out.

Obviously our offense wouldn't be as good, which is why you want him as the WR3, but you can't expect like 900 yards and 10 TD's out of a WR3.

I just am thinking about the years we had guys like Gallup as the third WR to Lamb and Cooper.

And I think Robinson was third behind Bryant and Miles Austin that year 2011... though he ended up outperforming Austin, Austin was ahead of him.

Or the year before, Bryant, Austin and Roy Williams.

Like a big three at WR. Would be nice if someone really exploded. Maybe it's Flournoy.
