Must See Movies

Latest riveting edition :rolleyes of CL watching old 80s movies he never saw in the day...

I watched Vision Quest last night and really liked it. It is some masterpiece of cinema, of course not, but good for what it was. Nice to see a "coming of age" movie not centered around girls and the prom. Modine plays such a likable kid, and I always thought wrestling was a cool sport even though I don't understand it at all. Back in the day I was jealous of Oklahoma being big on wrestling when Texas high schools didn't even have it.

Anyway, this thing looked about as 80s as anything I can remember, with the spare-looking (by later standards) gym and weight room with the homemade signs, and the houses and living conditions super basic. The halls and stairways and classrooms looked almost just like ours. Is it weird that when they went to see grandpa in the sticks they just pulled over and camped in a tent somewhere? Now maybe, but back then not so much. Great soundtrack, too. I didn't even remember the Madonna tie-in until I saw that.

Kind of odd seeing Dick Jones/Velos Cohaagen playing a kindly dad, though.
Lunatic Fringe was on every 80's wrestler's pre match pump up mix tape.

That's one I have never seen. I will check it out.

Does that song remind anyone else of Silverbear? :unsure

No? :unsure

This is decidedly unconfirmed, for the record.

This is the original IGN article this post is based on.

"Plus there are the actors we know are in the film and have heard rumors about, but haven't gotten confirmation on who they're playing yet, like Elliot Page (as Achilles?), Lupita Nyong’o (as Helen of Troy?), and more."
I’m hopeful that they are in the movie but not in those roles, which I think is possible.

Oh, it wouldn't surprise me at all. Just the fact that those two are in it at all is ridiculous.
I heard that Lupita Nyongo might be Athena.

Which is weird that she’s a Greek God but better than Helen of Troy who had a definite skin color. But like, how do you say what race a God is? Etc.

Eh, Nolan is pretty great. If he can limit the woke shit he could still put out a gem. But this doesn’t have good vibes.
Well, let me know what it's like after you watch it.
