Pick 92: Jaishawn Barham EDGE/ILB/OLB

:lol

I'm hoping for the best like everyone else. I didn't know the player so I read Brugler's write up and I came away feeling meh.

But I'm now seeing the Cowboys will be using him more at LB so hopefully those flaws Brugler mentioned will be diminished.

If it makes you feel better all the draft media types had him ranked in the 60's or so.

It was interesting watching this because in 2024 he was mostly used as a traditional off-ball LB, so seeing him make plays from those alignments in a traditional downhill thumping MLB type way was good to see.

His explosiveness and physicality coming downhill reminds me of Overshown, although the Baun comps make perfect sense given the sort of role they have in mind for him.

I think Barham might be sort of a litmus test for how good of a DC Parker actually is, because there are examples of guys like him being extremely valuable around the league but it's usually in a particular role and often times under one of the better defensive minds in the league. I'm sure Parker has the right sort of role in mind giving his experience with Baun in Philly, but whether or not he can make it come to life when he's calling the shots remains to be seen.

I think it’s clear that Barham is an off ball LB for us. His value profile and RAS score is much higher. That’s where we have a glaring need. And the coach said we were gonna try him there.

As a pass rushing edge he’s an ok pick in the third. As an ILB he could be much greater value. Again the analysts evaluating based on generic fits and not specific fits. I have to tamper my expectations but he has potential to be a steal.

Yeah I see a lot of evaluations that talk like we are running a normal 4-3. They talk about Overton as some sort of a questionable edge player. He isn't an edge or a DT. He is a 3-4 DE. It's totally different than what Lawrence will play for example. You're not looking for Overton to capture the edge with speed. You're looking for a guy to attack the defender in front of him and not just fly up field. You want him to shed and make plays. Which is something he is really good at. The ideal hope is Zack Allen type (who ran a 5.0 forty)

I get it if you go to a normal 4-3 some of these guys are a tough fit.

Barham in a 4-3 is a tweener. Maybe a pass rush specialist but not really a standard off the ball LBer. But in a 3-4 we see guys like him all the time. Especially when you look at the history of guys like Baun and Von Noy.

Overton in a 4-3 it's like not big enough for DT not fast enough for DE.

Another guy I've been kicking around in my head as a comp for Barham is Van Ginkel, the thread between all these types is that they're on multiple defenses with top tier DC's.

Yeah the more I watch him the more I get it. I had him in my mind as a 3-4 OLBer project as just a height/speed guy who was raw. But you watch him and he is actually just a hell of a play maker.

You always talk about a LBer who takes on blocks. But then when looking at LBers very few actually do that. Barham is the type of LBer who not just takes on blocks but will blow up the guy trying to block him. Ultra physical. He might be raw as a pass rusher but he isn't just a height/weight/speed guy. He is a real football player. I'm actually pretty pumped to see him on the field. I think he could be a game wrecker against the run.

So I admit I haven't watched Overton. The idea is just that he's so good a football player at all the (more or less) intangible things that it makes up for the very poor athleticism? Or that when he gains the 10-15 more pounds he needs that the lack of athleticism won't be an issue?

Not saying he sucks or anything. It's just odd to see everyone so pumped about a guy who profiles kind of like... Chauncey Golston. Who I actually kind of liked for what he was, but people weren't all hyped about him, either.

Chauncey Golston a full round later than where we took him would be a nice pick, but yes I think Golston is probably an average outcome for a guy like Overton.

A top level outcome would be someone like Allen or John Franklin-Myers.

I'll be honest, he is more fun to watch than Faulk. But at 287 pounds (proday is more recent and more realistic about his weight) he is way bigger and more powerful than Golston. Totally different types in my opinion. Golston was a 269 pound 4-3 LE in my opinion with some pass rush skills and good run stopping ability.

Overton is a 3-4 DE that would probably be a bust in a 4-3. Or at best a situational run stuffing DE. But if you liked Faulk I'm not sure how you wouldn't like Overton. And I'll admitt I didn't like Overton initially but im the weeks leading up to the draft I watched him and started to really understand. When the Faulk thing came up I wanted to look at the 3-4 end comparable players.

His named is pronounced BarHAM? That's odd. I have a friend from high school with the last name Barham, and his family pronounces it BARhum.
