Pick 23: Malachi Lawrence EDGE

WTH is a shin angle? And, anyone that disparages his "get off" needs to have their damn eyes examined. Especially if they do this shit for a living.

It is funny how you can tell in just a very few looks and words that the guy isn't a Sam Williams level fool.

I'd say I feel ok about our pass rusher group. Adding Gary and Lawrence took it from train wreck like last year to probably "fine."

Lawrence has a lot of upside and could really hit, or, he could be a Demarcus Lawrence level player too. Different style player, but, like an 8 sack guy.

I mean, no team is ever really out of the pass rusher game, look at the Giants, but, I don't think this changes that Dallas's biggest need on defense is ace, Parsons/Ware-level pass rusher.

Do you have Gary at OLB, and if so, then who is the other down lineman?

I was thinking

Gary
Clark
Q Williams

EZ
Overshown
________ (Brooks)
Lawrence

And you have Houston, Sam Williams, etc, as backup LBs.

If Gary is an LB not sure who the next DE is. We are thin there, which is why I wouldn't have despised Faulk like some would have.

I bet they'll only be in a base 3-4 look maybe 30-40% of the time, the rest will be some variation of nickel/dime 4-2-5, 4-1-6, etc. that will look like similar to a 4-3 with a 4-man line.

In those formations I think you'll generally see Gary/Ezeiruaku/Lawrence/Houston rotate at the two edge spots, and then Williams/Clark on the interior, plus maybe Gary or Lawrence lining up on the interior here and there. I bet they add another interior player somewhere in this draft though to potentially mix in, which is how I think Faulk would've been used.

In the base 3-4 formations it'll be some combo of Bullard/Ogbonnia/Clark/Williams with their hands down on the 3-man line, and then Gary/Ezeiruaku/Lawrence/Houston playing standing up as the two OLB's.

Overshown and a TBD ILB will be the traditional "off-ball" guys with Downs probably floating just about everywhere.

I think real speed at OLBer is important to our team and to Parker. What I really like about Lawrence is he has that elite first step quickness. I think UCF used him a little too far inside sometimes. You watch him play and he isn't always lined up far outside. Sometimes it almost looks like they shaded him to the insode shoulder of the OT. I wonder what his numbers would have looked like playing in Texas Tech's defense for example.

We once had the Taco/Watt debate and now we can have the Faulk/Lawrence debate.
A 4.5 40 is damned fast for a 250 pound man. Add in his already advanced hand movements and the pass rush might just well be fixed, minus another two-gapping DL that can rush the passer— very rare, and another blitzing ILB like Hill.

The DL would bring us a step closer to elite, as will the CBs we snag in the 4th round

Personally, I don't even pay attention to all his "moves." I'm sure that will be heavily refined and improved at this level with better coaching. I think the tools that can't be taught are enough.

You can already see what some are talking about that he takes false steps quite a bit. That's the kind of thing that will be worked out with more and better coaching. They'll figure out the three or four things that he does best, work on perfecting those things, and then let him go.

It's the 1.59 10 yard split that really impresses me. Those first 10 yards are probably the most important for a pass rusher. To be below a 1.6 on a 10 yard split is elite explosive ability. And I know we all joke a little that a vertical isn't that big of a deal. But it shows explosiveness. Lawrence had a 40 inch vert which is elite for a guy his size and weight.

You see the explosiveness on video when the scheme would sort of cut him loose. And it's nice to see the test numbers back that up. I think the pass rush specialist we brought in has a ton to work with when it comes to this guy.

It's kind of crazy watching him because sometimes you'll see him line heads up or even shaded to the inside of the O-lineman. And he will somehow still find a way to get outside, bend the corner and get to the QB. You'd assume a guy like this you'd always wanting lined up on the outside of the tackles shoulder or even wider and attacking upfield but that's not what they always had him doing.

It's really impressive to me to see a guy start inside and still be able to beat the OT with a speed rush up field to the outside. Feels like if UCF had just let him rush upfield from the outside he would have torched guys.

The draft is really live, Yet now here you are bird dogging my reposts.

Figures.
I am trying to catch up the board since I haven't been around all day.
