Pick 11: Caleb Downs SAFETY

Bonus points, now we have an in for signing Tar Heels legend Josh Downs when he hits free agency (and can reunite him with future starting QB and Tar Heels legend Sam Howell).

Micah was a better prospect and fell in the draft only because he COVID’ed out of his senior year. Faster and harder to stop than Reese, whom the Cowboys themselves rated higher than Downs.

In a redraft it’s 1-2 take your pick between Parsons and Chase.

I think some of that is hindsight, nobody thought Parsons would be the sort of edge rusher he turned into.

He was thought of as a traditional LB who could give you elite blitzing ability, maybe in the mold of a Wagner or Devin White.

Yeah I think a lot of it is hindsight. But Parsons was just a great football player who I think teams lacked vision for. Kind of like Downs is just a great football player. And in his case I think our DC has a perfect vision for him. From the day we hired our DC if you go back and watch the interviews it was like he already was talking about and had his heart set on Downs.

Oh, I dunno about that.

Of course I don't think we thought he would be a yearly 12-14 sack guy necessarily, but Wagner? I don't know about that.

I think we were saying Chess Piece for Parsons even at the time, but definitely were thinking of him rushing as a LB and even "a little" as a down lineman. Of course he became exclusively that.

Yea he had the potential to do it situationally but I don't think anybody thought he'd be an elite edge rusher.

I think him and Downs were probably roughly equal as prospects, which is a key distinction compared to what they became.

But even aside from that, I do think ultimately a fully formed NFL-version of Downs will be in the conversation with Ware and Parsons as one of our best defensive players of the last 20-30 years.
