Must See Movies

My daughter and I have decided to watch the Avengers series from start to finish in chronological order. We have seen all of them at one point or another, bit never in order like this. At first I wasn't sure about sticking with it for 22 movies, but she told me she really wanted to, and being the pushover I am, here we are. We are currently 3 of 22 in. We are going to try to watch at least one every day. I know I'm a dork but I'm looking forward to it.

My son is about to turn 10 (horrifying, when I think about it).

He's just getting to the age where he can really start to watch some good movies, and I'm so into it.

Previously, even as a 7-8-9 year old, we could watch, perhaps, like, Indiana Jones, if we skipped over the face melting parts. Or other "kid friendly" action/adventure movies like National Treasure.

But last week I took him to see Fellowship of the Ring in a theatrical re-release and he completely loved it (side note: We have been reading the books for about a year now and we are almost at the end of the Return of the King, so he knew the plot of the film from that - and I was damned sure not going to let him see any movie without having first read the books. In fact I was going to say he had to read ALL the books before seeing a single movie, but I broke down and caved when I heard the movies were in theaters this January, since we were at least ALMOST done the books).

This weekend we were "snowed in" and bored, so we decided to watch Jurassic Park, the original. He liked that too. (my 8 year old daughter also watched that with us, but we had to cover eyes at points).

It's so tough to watch good movies because since having kids, you have to avoid so many PG-13 or R rated things cause they are too small. And when they go to bed, my wife likes to be in OUR bed, she doesn't want to sit on a couch in the bonus room, she wants to be warm and tucked in (she's a cold blooded lizard, my wife, sadly). But the bonus room is where the 85" TV is, and the surround sound. And I refuse to watch some of these blockbusters I listed (on the prior page) on my "tiny" 46" 1080p bedroom TV (that TV was my first TV purchase as a single employed male - back in like 2010 for $1000).

Long way of saying, since I was thinking about it after Cotton's post, how excited I am that in just a couple more short years I'll get to be watching these movies with my son for the first time, in my movie theater-like bonus room, on a massive 4k TV. All the classics, like Die Hard, Terminator 2, Heat, Saving Private Ryan, etc, etc.

Problem is if I remember correctly from the pics you posted here is in that room you have a picture of Garrett. It will probably scare him too much to enjoy a movie.

It's actually a signed Garrett 8x11. When I was a kid a friend of mine told me about how you could get the World Almanac or something and it had all the professional sports teams' mailing addresses in it. What a time, right on the cusp of the internet.

He said that you could send a letter to a player at the teams address and if you included a card of that player, that sometimes they'd sign it and send it back. So we both poured through our card collections and got a bunch of our doubles and started mailing them out. Usually including some made up story about how we were life long fans of said team/player, like I know I sent Chris Warren from the Seahawks a card, and I know he signed it and returned it. I'm not sure where it is now, but I don't think I would have thrown it away.

And of course I sent like, Emmitt, Troy, and Mike some cards but those never came back, they probably got too many from people.

The two I remember besides Chris Warren were - Charles Haley and Jason Garrett. I had a Garrett card of him playing in the world league. Not only did he sign the card and send it back, but he also included a signed 8x11. That's the photo.

I'm not sure where either of the Charles Haley or Garrett cards are now, like the Warren one.

FWIW I also have obtained Charles Haley's autograph on other things now as well. He apparently has been a hang-around type for the franchise, my dad went on the stadium tour back in 2015 with my father in law and they bought me a full size replica helmet AND football, and got some players to sign it. Apparently the tour includes a signing session with some players. They really got the short end of the stick with the player meetings, it was like Zuriel Smith, Tyrone Crawford, Randy Gregory. But Haley was there too and they got his autograph. My dad and I also had this giant Cowboys flag from when he and I went a bunch of times to Texas Stadium in the late 90s/early 2000s, before Jerry broke our spirits, and we had once seen Jerry outside the stadium before a game and he signed the flag for us. They also got all the players to sign the flag.

So I've got a handful of near meaningless player signatures for Cowboys stuff.

I also picked up a Novacheck signed 8x11 somewhere. I'm not sure who gave that to me. I didn't pay for it. I think it was found at a yard sale or someone was giving it away or something.

Edit: It was Lucky Whitehead, not Zuriel Smith, Smith played in like 2003, lol.

As someone who was raised in the 70s and 80s this makes me chuckle. My wife and I were talking about this just last night. No other generation will ever witness the type of shift in technology that Gen X did. We went from throwing rocks at each other as kids to circus-like TVs that make you think you are in the theater and being able to talk to someone using a watch. It's insane and I wouldn't have it any other way.

My kids have a fucking treehouse (albeit custom made) and a trampoline and still throw rocks at each other so I'll be damned if they are going to be raised like other Gen Alphas.

But yes, I'm allowed to spoil myself at ridiculous lengths with basically a home movie theater.

Why am I not surprised the PR Robot had 8x11s of himself ready to send to people?

Was the photo like this?

Hell yeah, you're allowed to spoil yourself. I was just noting the massive shift we have witnessed in our lifetimes. The first TV I bought was a 42" TV that if you tied it to a cruise ship it would probably sink it it was so heavy. And I was 24 when I bought it.

God damn it, Chapo. I love you and all but I will ban you. ~walks off grumbling~

Oh, and more on point, there is nothing like getting to watch "grown-up" movies with your kids and them actually enjoying them. It is definitely a game-changer. Enjoy, brother.

I don’t know that it was “ready to send.” He custom signed it including my name.
That's cool, man (well, as cool as it can be involving Garrett). Hope you know I was giving him shit, not you.

I hope you know I was just giving you shit about the fucking massive ass picture of Garrett.
Frankly, I did that on my phone and just realized how huge that pic was. Now that I can see it, I should ban myself.

It's okay. I fixed it for you. I had to. :lol

Didn't he pass away recently? I tried to watch this movie again at least 10 years ago and didn't even make it 15 minutes before turning it off. Which is weird because when I was 13, I thought it was the greatest movie ever.
