My top 3 are Flores, Schwartz and Leonhard, but after that I'd be open to Parker.

The fact they have not talked to Flores or Schwartz tells me one or both are unattainable, for a number of reasons.

Agreed, I'd be shocked if Flores was a DC anywhere but Minnesota and Schwartz will either stay in Cleveland or follow Stefanski.

Flores is probably at least 50/50 to be a HC somewhere with all the openings.

I don't have any reason to dislike this guy exactly but I also don't see any reason to be excited either.

Leonhard we all know about but even Parker I think has a very similar profile in terms of NFL coaching experience. I prefer Leonhard because he was a high level DC in college for several years but Parker is similar outside of the college experience.

Both have been "passing game coordinators"/DB coaches for elite defenses under elite DC's (with elite secondaries) over the last two years. Leonhard has the added "assistant HC" title, but Parker is a guy who Fangio seemingly loves and has quickly given him added responsibility in a very short period of time at two separate stops. Bottom line is both are fast risers and have played prominent roles on elite defenses, with elite position groups, at young ages.

With Leonhard I like that he had a hand in developing a bunch of so-so talents at Wisconsin who have gone on to become excellent NFL players, largely due to effort, intelligence and physicality, not elite physical talent. With Parker I like that he's been the coach of a unit that has hit big on 3 high picks at his position group in just two drafts with Mitchell, DeJean and Mukuba. They were all 1's or 2's to be fair, and obviously those picks aren't all because of a DB coach, but hitting on 3 straight picks on a specific position group in two years no matter how high the picks are is impressive.

Jones on the other hand is kind of a journeyman, bounced back and forth between college and the NFL, and was never really part of a good defense until he linked up with Flores in Minnesota. In fact, the defenses he was on prior to Flores with the Vikings (Dolphins 2016-17, Bengals 2018-19, Vikings 2020 and 2022) were pretty much universally terrible.

Maybe he's some sort of savant who has flown under the radar but those interviews better have been mind blowing if he ends up being the guy.
 
Just from what little I've seen of them on the interwebs, I much prefer Parker to Jones. Nick Harris said people around the league think Parker will one day be pretty great. Jones just seemed more like a rah-rah kind of guy to me.

Even without that sort of anecdotal evidence Parker has a much better resume.

Jones has been around longer but he's basically done nothing but coach on shitty defenses until Flores came around in Minnesota.

You have to be careful attributing too much success to a position coach but ultimately all you have to look at is the type of defenses a guy has coached on, the types of units/players they've coached, and the type of coaches they've worked under.

Parker in just a few short years already has a more impressive resume in that regard than Jones.

And it was the pressures that sort of make the secondary look great in my opinion. Hard to say what the secondary looks like if he can't coach the exotic pressures.

Yea their secondary has just been kind of stitched together, which I guess is kind of impressive, but I think the majority of their defensive success is because Flores is just an amazing strategist.

They've gotten pretty good play out of guys like Byron Murphy and Isaiah Rodgers, both FA signings, but they haven't done much in the way of drafting and developing with this guy as their DB coach and actually had a few massive busts with high picks in guys like Andrew Booth and Jeff Gladney.

It's one thing if they go with a guy like Gannon with his HC experience, was the DC when the Eagles went to the SB in 2022, etc., but going with a guy like Jones over Parker would make very little sense.
 
So if the Broncos keep winning you think Dallas waits for Leonhard?

Of the guys we've talked to #2 is the dude from Philly for me.

Makes you wonder why they're even so interested in Jones, then.

It seems to me obvious that you can't just hire the assistant to the "genius" (not sure Flores is worthy of that label, but you get the idea) and get similar results. We've seen this time and again, like with Belichick's assistants failing as HCs, or with Andy Reid's doing the same. But I guess it's not that obvious because people keep trying it.

I'd much rather hire the guy who organically rises through the ranks, gets accolades from smart people who know, etc. That's what happened with Klayton Adams.

Yeah, you can't tell me any of this is him. Hell if Parker ends up anywhere I'd give him more to Fangio. I'm certain Sirianni did zero for Parker's career.

Is Flores doing DC interviews? He might be holding out to see if he can get a HC job first.
