But really, I didn't realize he'd worked for McDermott. That could still be a possibility, if he doesn't take a year off.

This is bullshit. The continuity stuff is way way overblown. Like I mentioned before, Quinn was hired as the 3rd DC in 3 years and with a completely different scheme than Nolan. And it worked out really well.

A bad scheme is a bad scheme.

Can he be Robert Saleh 2.0? I have no idea. But if it was Whitecotton my hope would be he learned something from Saleh while they were together.

He is the only defensive assistant that I don't think would try to run Eberflus's system. They weren't really connected when we hired them. So the continuity argument is kind of shit anyway.

That would be taking the lesser of what will be available. That style Salah employs is hot right now and might get him back as a head coach. You then have Ulbrich with the same thing. He would be a huge leap of faith to promote.

Just make Ulbrich the DC and keep Whitecotton as DL coach if you're so hard up for that scheme.
 
The obsession with scheme is stupid. Sure, to some degree they should be able to fit the players we have, but any decent coordinator isn't too locked into his pet scheme and can adapt to what his players do well. And we need so many new players anyway, you can get ones that fit what you want to do.

About the only thing I wouldn't want is a DC who made Quinnen (and to a much lesser degree Osa) a two-gap player, for instance. But that's about it.

I agree except I want someone to come from a history of systems that work. I don't want a guy like Eberflus for example who runs a scheme and who is not capable of adjusting. And by the way what I'm really looking at when I talk scheme is more about the front 7 then anything. Every coach runs some zone, some man and basically some of every coverage. So I'm not as worried about that. But what coaches do up front is different from coach to coach. Some blitz, some use odd fronts and some run a wide 9. I'm not going to hire a defensive coordinator who is very experienced and successful at doing one thing and then ask him to change what he is doing to something he is less familiar with. Sort of the old keeping Zimmer but then asking him to run a 3-4 Parcells scheme. You're just not taking advantage of the coaches talents and knowledge.

So yeah, scheme does matter to me. But it's a mixture of scheme and a coordinator who is capable of calling whatever takes best advantage of our talent.

I look at safety and LBer as something that absolutely needs addressed in free agency. Those are the cheapest positions on defense to fill in free agency. I'd like to load up on some mid to lower tier corners as well. But elite corners and pass rushers in free agency cost a fortune and are hard to find in free agency. So I'm not going to hold my breath that we sign a shutdown corner or elite pass rusher. It's just highly unlikely. On the other hand I think you can find good starting LBers and safeties at pretty reasonable prices. And then maybe see if you can find a Jordan Lewis level corner at least. Protects yourself to be able to draft freely.
 
CB is extremely strong this year and I like our second first as a spot to take one, or potentially after a trade down.

I don't love it at 12 since I think there's really good depth and would rather wait, although if the board is kind of bare at 12 I wouldn't hate Delane or McCoy if he shows he's back physically.

Yeah I don't want to lock myself into drafting a particularly position but in an ideal world at 12 you want an elite front 7 guy on defense. I'd be thrilled with an elite corner too but ultimately an elite front 7 guy is going to have an impact on almost every defensive snap. A corner is really just meant to take one guy out of the game.

So if I'm being really honest I want an impact edge defender at 12. Sonny Styles would probably be in the mix for me as well. He isn't really an edge player but I think he has the potential to be a really high impact LBer in the NFL. I want the most impact I can get on defense for my buck with that pick. And while a corner would be a great piece, I think a front 7 defender would be a bigger piece. But maybe that's not how the cookie crumbles and the edges I like are gone and instead I'm taking a corner. But right now I'd have a few edges, Styles and probably Downs before I'm taking one of these corners. But I really do like Delane and McCoy. And I'd love to have them on my defense so it's no real knock on those guys.

Any run and hit lb would be great,what we have for the last couple years are slow lbs who make plays 5 yards pass the line of scrimmage.
