"For a team that does not pursue a big time coaching candidate at a large salary".
I like Cavanaugh generally but this is factually incorrect.
Supposedly the Cowboys are paying Eberflus around top 4 or 5 DC money. They're literally giving Eberflus the large salary that Cavanaugh claims they don't give out.
Second, he questions why Flores would want to come here. It's not hard to figure out. I'm sure money would be a large factor if we offered more than Minnesota, but also there's no question the Cowboys are a much higher profile team than Minnesota with usually way more national and prime time games. If he has ambition to be a HC again but doesn't get it this time around, being a successful DC in Dallas will certainly get him noticed.
Also, a lot of people (not just Cavanaugh) seem to be implying that the PFT article is nothing but click bait. It's definitely click bait, but it does in fact say, "And the increasing chatter in league circles is that the Cowboys will be firmly in play for Flores."
That's not speculation from Florio. He's stating that he's heard people saying this. Maybe it's true maybe not (the cowboys get rumored for everything of course) but there does appear to be a little more meat on this rumor than it's getting credit for.
All that said, I think Flores returns to Minnesota. They have a major advantage in being able to negotiate with him exclusively right now, and guys will often stay where they're comfortable if the money is roughly even. Not to mention if he's interviewing for HC positions that might drag out longer than a team like the Cowboys would want to wait to fill their DC position.
But I don't think it's impossible like Cavanaugh suggests here.
