Yea I think it's going to take a minor miracle for this fool to keep his job, especially since Schottenheimer kinda blew up on him during the game.

I really just hope they let Schotty pick the next guy. And given what he did on the offensive staff I would not be shocked if it's someone who isn't a former head coach. Now if Jerry gets to pick? Just assume former head coach as your next defensive coordinator. He loves to hire those types.

Yea I could go either way, I think the former HC route has been effective. Quinn here obviously, even if his philosophy is sort of fatally flawed.

But look around the league and most of the top DC's right now fall into that retread HC category. Fangio, Spagnuolo, Joseph, Dennis Allen, Saleh, Flores.

Of course there are several of the other types too, which is why I'm not beholden to one path or another, I just want a choice that's somewhat inspired and aggressive.

Bowles was in that group too before Arians retired, and you could argue that he's basically just a glorified DC even now.

I'd be perfectly fine with either direction though as long as it isn't some shit bird.

And I'm definitely not going to complain if Schwartz or Bowles are our DC next year.
 
We need a DC that can implement a scheme that works for the players we have. He needs to be creative enough and flexible enough to utilize the talent we have in ways that makes them successful. No more "this is my scheme and we're going to run it no matter the outcome" because I've seen enough of receivers running free through the secondary. I've seen enough of never blitzing and only rushing 3 or 4 and letting the quarterback sit back there for a week and then completing a pass. If a defensive scheme only works with "hall of fame" level players running it, then it's not worth anything. I see other teams with what I consider average defensive talent, still have good defenses.

So whoever that is... can we please hire them.

Yeah we need someone with creativity who is a bright defensive mind.

You see brilliant offensive minds in the NFL. We need the defensive version of that. Someone that is sitting their trying to think of ways to free up his best players or seeing the tendencies of an opposing QB and cooking up looks to take advantage of that.

What we don't need is a guy that runs a scheme and is unwilling to change or modify things beyond a drive or two a game.
 
I just have to say this out loud. I keep seeing this idea that it's a problem if they change DCs again because there's no continuity.

Did we worry about that when we let Nolan go?

And guess what? When we got the DC right with Quinn, the defense improved significantly and immediately.

Especially with a guy who is a former head coach like Eberflus. It gives him a false sense that he isn't really working under the head coach. That he kind of instead is the head coach of the defense. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why you see creativity for a couple drives and then right back to the normal operation after. Like ok, here is your creative stuff Schotty, and now that I've done that I'm going back to what I want to do.

Exactly.

And it's not like they fired several DCs in a row. One got promoted, one left on his own. You whiffed on this one, but you can't let that prevent you from fixing a mistake.

It doesn't take that long to implement a defensive system. I'm not saying that over an extended period of time it doesn't get even better. But this isn't like playing QB and learning a new system all over again. Defensive players can learn their role in a new defensive scheme relatively quickly. Give a guy a full training camp in a scheme and you can pretty much be ready by the start of the season. Offense is a little different because it takes time for a QB to get comfortable in a scheme. And honestly your offense doesn't run without the QB doing his job.
 
After listening to Jerry's PC I think Eberflus is gone, he's almost talking about him in the past tense.

Realistically I don't think there's anything he can do over the last two weeks to save his job, especially against potentially a 3rd string QB next week.
