Reading up on the rabbit hole a little he seems to have had some mental issues (maybe CTE?) or addiction issues or both. Complete speculation on my part.

Any time you're talking about a RB who ran with a lot of physicality, my mind always jumps to CTE. It's just such a brutal game for that position.
