They will say it was them doing their due diligence.
To make it look like you cast a wide net and had most or all of the "big names" associated with your search.
Yep, and to gather intel on your own team. Teams wouldn't mind hearing from a good defensive mind what he thinks they can improve.

The Chargers are the job that I think could be attractive. Nice weather, real QB in place and some talent on the defense already. I could see that being an attractive job for Quinn or any head coach really.

Panthers and Commanders are total train wrecks. You're starting from scratch and you better feel comfortable that the owners/GMs will give you 3 years to turn it around.

I could see Carolina being attractive also. We've all written Young off, but I bet most coaches haven't.

Actually I could see Washington being attractive now too. They have a high draft picks and a real shot at a QB, plus they have an owner who also owns the Devils and Sixers so there's some stability and trust there now.

Obviously with Herbert and the weather there, the Chargers are most attractive.

I know he's always stayed and I'm sure he gets paid well, but I can't help but think he'd leave if offered not just a GM job but also a president of football operations title.

We really cannot afford to lose him so Jerry better be willing to change the title or pay him double the highest offer he receives.

Not positive about executive positions, but I doubt Jerry is even obligated to let him interview if he doesn't want to.

We probably pay him as well as a GM job would, he's probably very comfortable in the area, and his job security is likely way better here than anywhere else (other teams will get impatient when he's in charge, but he's not in charge here so as long as he drafts well the results on the field are unlikely to be blamed on him. He gets zero heat here despite winning nothing while he's been here).

I can't see him going anywhere unless there's something going on behind the scenes that hasn't been reported.

On another note, though... Not that I want McClay to go, and I'm sure Jerry won't let it happen, but wouldn't we get a sweet draft pick if he did?

I could squint and see the Panthers hire him. The Chargers and Redskins would shock me. I doubt either goes defensive coach this time around.
I think the Panthers will end up having to settle on a lesser known coach who's just happy to have the opportunity.

I don't think an experienced HC like Quinn will stick their neck out for a job like that. The roster sucks. They don't have a high draft pick. They may not have a QB. And the owner has proven to be a meddlesome douche with a quick trigger finger.

I have a hard time seeing a quality retread like Quinn putting themselves in that position. That's a job that desperate POS retreads like Josh McDaniels or Adam Gase would take.

Not worth the pick to me. He is the only thing standing in between Jerry and the draft.

We've had Ireland and other people in that position in the past, I'm sure we'd fill it if he left. I'm less worried about Jerry and more worried about replacing him with someone less competent.

If he goes to the Panthers or Raiders we can bank on him being back in about 2-3 years once he inevitably flames out.

You're probably right but then again if Quinn is taking the interview I'd assume he has some level of interest.

It could be a contract leverage maneuver in order to squeeze a pay raise out of the Cowboys. :shrug

Interviewing for other jobs in order to get a pay raise from your current team is a pretty common move at the college level.

He's taken a bunch of interviews the last two years and nothing materialized, he might have a bit more urgency to jump this year because he might sense opportunities drying up, but we'll see.

I think the biggest thing is whatever happens with the Seahawks, Patriots and Titans jobs over the next few days. If Carroll, Belichick and Vrabel all stay, or even if 2/3 stay (assuming one is Carroll), I just don't see many strong possibilities for him.

In that case you'd have Washington, Atlanta, Carolina, Chargers, Raiders, and maybe the Titans open?

No real obvious fits there, and if Vrabel or Belichick are let go there's a decent chance they end up hired as HC's at one of the other openings to begin with.

Seattle has always been the biggest threat, if Carroll remains there I think there's at least a 50/50 chance Quinn stays, and probably closer to 70%.

Exactly.

Like McCarthy, we've finally got someone in charge of something football related that is doing things well.

Just like with HC's, we don't have the best record for identifying talent evaluation people.

I mean, Jerry still fucking consults Barry Switzer and asked old man Gil Brandt for help.

There's no way I want to go back to those days so I say keep him at all costs because at least with him you know we have a solid and mostly successful system in place.
