Broaddus: Injuries To Guards Not Best Way To Start Camp

Posted 41 minutes ago

Bryan Broaddus Football Analyst/Scout

When the phase “Day-to-Day” is used by head coaches in football, it always gets my attention. The Dallas Cowboys will once again opening training camp much like they did in 2012 with two offensive linemen sitting out the first practice with injuries.

Starting left guard Nate Livings and the man he is competing with for that spot, Ronald Leary will miss the first practice when the squad takes the field on Sunday here in Oxnard. Both players suffered calf injuries last week in their preparations for this camp. For Livings, it has been a difficult offseason where he has had to deal with knee issues which caused him to miss several practices.

On the other side, Leary had taken advantage of both Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau missing time with the first offensive line. Leary was able to get work on both the left and right side which gave the front office and coaches the confidence that he was ready to compete for the job after a season of spending time on the practice squad and working with the scout team. Leary was making progress with the mental side of the game which appeared to be the most significant thing that was holding him back.

For an offensive line that shouldered the blame for the inability to run the ball with any consistency, this is clearly not the way this group wanted to start out. There are other positions on the squad where you can work around injuries in camp and still function well but the offensive line is not one of those.

With the commitment to Travis Frederick as a rookie center, he needs to spend as many reps as he can with Livings, Bernadeau and Leary, because these are the guys that are going to play when they line up against the Giants on opening night. Frederick needs to feel as comfortable as possible with these guys but they also need to feel right with him. In this zone scheme, there is a feel that these linemen develop of how they work together. When Frederick takes a hard step front side, he has to know that if his man goes away, that Nate Livings will be there to cut him off. How Livings takes his steps is different than Leary or Bernadeau, even though they are trying to execute the same block.

In the opening press conference, Jason Garrett said that Travis Frederick would start out as the center and when the opportunity presented itself, he would get some reps at guard. The way I believe that practice will open on Sunday is that David Arkin will be the starter at left guard, with Frederick at center and Bernadeau on the right side. Kevin Kowalski should be the swing guy at both spots. I do not anticipate that Phil Costa will see any work at guard because the coaches like to use bulk inside at that spot but look for him to get plenty of work at center.

Both Livings and Leary met with the medical staff today as they went through their physical and from my experience in these situations, the staff will look at how they move around on Sunday and get a better gage then what they need to accomplish before heading back on the field.

The calf injury always makes me nervous especially with the offensive line because how they have to push off and use their lower body for leverage so this can be a serious injury. The last thing this club needs is their offensive line dealing with injuries right out of the gate after what they went through last season. There are so many things that need to be right for this team to have success and the offensive line is at the top of that list. Being “Day-to-Day” never gives me a great deal of confidence because of the unknown associated with it. This staff hopes that it’s just more like a day.

This is the time of year my Jerry hate reaches it's pinnacle. Just seeing that wrinkled up fricktard spouting off and our idiotic fanbase eating it up makes me want to stomp kittens.

Forget about Jones and focus on the team. Life will be easier.

i have such low hopes for Romo this year. This "cyst" that he had removed is fishy. Regardless, the excuses about the difficulty of being in football shape after back surgery is a very discouraging statement.

I don't think you have to worry about Romo's toughness. He has already proven he can play through pain.

Arkin should be ready to step up in another year or two.

Also, I miss Parcells talking about contingencies. We're more wing & a prayer'n it.

During yesterday's training camp interviews Jerry had this to say about Garrett's job security:

“(Garrett)’s been directly involved in the coaching of Romo for six years,” Jones siad. “When he got here, Romo had never had the same guy two years in a row. We’ve got to take advantage of that. His safety net presence for what we’re doing not only as a team, but on offense, is a big part of the plan. It gives us a real advantage.”

I hadn't factored in Romo's comfort level with Garrett. Unless the Cowboys finish with 6 or fewer wins, I think the old man just might hold on to Garrett for as long as he has Romo at QB.

It will take a monumental collapse from Garrett for him to get canned. We are talking like 4-12 or 5-11 here and looking real bad in the process. Another 8-8 allows him to run out the rest of his contract which goes through 2014.

Jerry hates paying coaches, head or assistant, money when they are gone. That's why you see guys on the staff stick around until they finally just go away.

Those two guard signings have been an unmitigated disaster.

Whoever was responsible for those should have owned up to it this offseason and cut bait.

Yep, those two piece of shit signings completely confounded me, we could have had Grubbs for the price of those two and actually gotten a good player. Between Grubbs and Frederick we'd have a very solid interior despite who else we had at the 3rd spot.

Callahan had a part in it. There is no way Jones dug those two losers up himself.

I'm sure Callahan did have a part in it, but like Parcells had a part in Stephen Peterman and Jacob whatshisface and Ryan Young.

A quality GM who devoted all his time to pro personnel, instead of having to spend 90% of his time coaching and then 10% of his time recruiting former players he has some experience with, might be able to recognize that there are better options on the market.

You have got to be shitting me with this.

Let's just go 3-13 and take one of these QB's or Clowney with our top 5 pick, fuck this half assed organization.

Cowboys also put a receiver, Lavasier Tuinei, on non-football list.
