As an Attorney, I see this shit kind of a lot.

It's amazing what desperate older people... mostly women... will believe. And what they'll do to chase that belief.

Thousands and thousands, and hundreds of thousands, of dollars. They just transfer it away. Wire it, send checks, whatever. To a person they met on the internet claiming to be something they are not.

For men, it's usually a crypto scam. It's not the allure of a fake romance, it's usually the promise of a huge investment opportunity. See that one a lot too.

I had an elderly male client get scammed like this. Some girl he met online, told me it was his girl friend, she would send him check to deposit and then have him send money out (can't remember exactly what for) and then the checks he deposited came back as fraud. Guy ended up out like 15,000 and it was still hard to get him to understand that wasn't likely even a girl.

I've actually seen it a couple times with a similar scam and older men. They really struggle to believe it's a scam even.

In my world we live this, sending warning emails/texts and building AI models to try and stop it

We stop nearly 99% of it, and that last bit is incredibly frustrating because I could picture my mom falling for these scams
