While cleaning up this morning, I was about to throw away a couple packs of old hot dog buns.

They were nearly a week out of date, but I hated the thought of throwing 12 buns away.

Immediately I thought of my wife's late Granny, who would save bread in a freezer bag and make a batch of bread pudding for Sunday dinners.

We don't have her recipe, sadly, so I did some quick Googling and pieced together a good idea of what I wanted to do.

Others had made it with hot dog buns before, but the nasty bastards left the buns intact and just poured the mixture over the buns...looked nasty as shit.

I cut them all up into cubes & threw them in a lightly-greased 9 x 13. Turn the oven up to 350.

Then mixed all this together:

5 eggs
3/4 c melted butter
3 t vanilla
c white sugar
c brown sugar
1 1/2 T cinnamon
t nutmeg powder
3 3/4 c milk

Baked for 40 - 45 minutes

That shit's good as hell with some ice cream and caramel sauce, but I've bout ate the whole damn thing plain out the pan.

They'll never know they're eating hot dog buns!

I make bread pudding all the time with our old bread. That stuff is excellent. We eat it with cream poured over the top.

I love that shit. If you haven't tried some in a bowl with some cream over the top, you need to. So F'n good. Either heavy cream or half n' half. Whichever you prefer. Both are good.

We do homemade whipped cream with heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla...may try some with the next batch.

Warm right out of the oven, with cold cream poured over the top. Hells MF'n ayuh.

We may have just discovered Flapjack and Ryobi's superfood.

Cool sweater grandma has it done. It amazes me that people just don’t make their own pasta sauce. It is so simple. If you do not have fresh, used crushed tomatoes out of a can, around a stick of butter and cut an onion in half with garlic. It simmers while you boil the pasta.

I should try making my own sauce.

You seriously cannot fuck it up and in terms of thickness and flavor, it kicks the shit out of a jar. I usually jar my own or freeze it. Also reserve the pasta water, about a cup. Store the noodles in half to 3/4, use the rest to extend the sauce if you want it thinner.

Marry her, they said. She's handy in the kitchen, they said.
