I'm torn because I understand the need to lash out and blame anyone other than yourself if something happens to your kid. I completely empathize.
That said, this seems ridiculous on the surface.
If your kid is so maladjusted that he can't handle interactions with AI without confusing it with reality, it's the parent's job to limit his access to such things.
And, how did he get so maladjusted and vulnerable in the first place, and why wasn't he on medication or something? The whole thing screams parental failure.

Parents can't comoletely limit kids if the kid really wants to go there. They always find a way. Not saying that they don't have any responsibility here. Just trying to help us all remember when we were kids and told no.

I don't think the company is totally to blame -- obviously -- but I kind of hate AI so part of me is glad to see them sued.
When you read the final exchange with the kid. it's really sad. AI is supposedly so smart, but wasn't smart enough to realize what he was getting at.

I mean you can limit access to electronics pretty easily at that age. It's not like at 14 they can go pay for internet access/cell service or drive to a place that has free wifi. They really only have that stuff if you provide it as a parent. Now once a kid is 16 and starts a job, you really do become a bit helpless as a parent. I don't want my kids to ever know or understand that but reality is it is kind of true.
With a slight exception. Schools now give kids ipads. I think those computers are pretty restricted in terms of access but I guess it would be hard to control a kid on a device like that when they are at school.

I mean the kid shot himself because he believed in death he would get to meet a fictional character. It's pretty bizarre. Like I get believing that in death you will be back with your loved ones who already passed away.
But to think you'll meet Tom and Jerry?

To us, that's ridiculous. But the environment these kids have been brought up in -- just the last few years, really -- is almost that the virtual world is real. Plus a lot of the powers that be are pushing AI as almost equivalent to human life, or at least that it will be soon. Look into transhumanism. It's scary.
Point is, I can almost see how a desperate kid could think this, as crazy as that sounds to us who grew up in a different time.
