I've paid attention to playoff hockey more than ever these last two years and here's the conclusion that I've come to....
I'm convinced that fast starts have the least amount of importance in hockey than it does in any other team sport.
You see teams jump to 2 or even 3 goal leads in the 1st period only to see that game evened up eventually.
It's happened so often that when the Stars jumped up to a 2-0 lead after only 5 min I didn't even get excited. I was basically in wait and see mode and sure enough, they lost by 3 in the end.
I know early leads can get wiped out in any sport, but you don't usually see a team fall behind two or three scores that early in a game and rebound from it, much less see the game go in the extreme opposite direction as often as you do in hockey.
It's almost like the 1st period doesn't even matter sometimes and I don't think that's necessarily a good thing.
