Just like that other dude made up the Cowboys didn't reach out to him.

And there have been whispers about what Johnson wants and doesn't want. How many teams did he interview this year? How many teams did Glenn interview with? They both went where they wanted to go.
It is that way with players too.

Yeah, but neither of them were our HC.

McCarthy was not a puppet but he didn't have the Jimmy Johnson/Bill Parcells level of control either so he was a bit of a unique case.

But everyone else was a puppet HC who never got that opportunity again and for good reason.

So my point stands -- if you think being the HC of the Dallas Cowboys under these conditions is going to help you, then you're dead wrong.
Well sure, because if a head coach was doing well in Dallas he wouldn't leave Dallas. These coaches never leave here until they are essentially fired (via contract expiring).

Plus when you start by hiring a shit head coach (Garrett, Campo) no amount of exposure in Dallas is going to get you another opportunity. McCarthy probably has the best shot of anyone at getting another chance at head coach. Except he is a retread that was already sort of not wanted by the NFL before the Cowboys brought him in.

I'd guess that he doesn't do much of anything and is just briefed and generally supplemented by guys like McClay, Stephen, so on and so forth. Then I'd imagine he just interjects himself randomly whenever he feels like it, like a bad boss who is usually disengaged but then starts throwing around orders at random on a whim.
When I'm 82 I hope I'm not doing much of anything work related. So I get it. But then stop being the decision maker. Delegate that to someone competent and sit back and enjoy the last years of your life. Of course Jerry won't do that either. So instead we get a GM making all the decisions who has no idea what is actually going on in the world of football.

And the sad thing is, the guys supplementing him in McClay and Stephen aren't exactly great help either. I think Stephen is a straight up dolt. I like McClay but I don't think he really does much of anything with NFL free agency or coaching hirings. He runs the draft and I'm not sure of much else. And even that he has to be careful to prevent Jerry from stepping in and fucking it all up like a drunk dad at his daughter's wedding.

You can own the Cowboys and work 10 hours a week. That's not that difficult to do if you hire and delegate. But you can't be a competent GM and owner.

Yeah, it just sucks watching the Eagles win division crown after division crown while we fuck around.
Yeah but you want the top pick and Dak booted. This is the fastest route there. So in a way you should be rooting for Brian...

I don't know whether Manning will come out in 2026 or 2027 but we could definitely be in play for the top pick either of those years with this sort of a shit show on our hands.
And if he turns out like they think it would just be another talent that we are wasting.

I root for them to make the right decisions. Sadly they never will.

Hiring Brian Schottenheimer won't get them any closer to the right decisions. They'll somehow mess it up. They'll be just good enough to miss out on Manning, just good enough that they aren't convinced their way is wrong. Even if he does completely tank it they won't do what they need to do.

Regarding nepotism for ex-players, I can't believe Jerry isn't trying to find a job for Sean Lee.

So hear me out.

I actually think that dude would make a killer coach. No idea what he is up to these days but he was a great leader, knew everything going on at all times on defense and was passionate. You want to tell me Sean Lee is going to be the next head coach and I think I'd say, let's fucking go.

On paper he would look like a terribly unqualified candidate and he would be. But at least I could see the makings of a great coach.

You might say Witten is similar. But I've never gotten the impression that Witten was overly football smart. I think he was smart at TE. But I don't think he understands a lot more than that. Then again, I'm not sure Dan Campbell does either.
