I'm guessing Jerry's success rate on hiring coaches is much lower. Again, I can't think of a good hire outside of Parcells and Jimmy Johnson.
Gailey wasn’t the shite show Garrett is and had far less control. He brought in quality FAs, like Ernie Mills, who filled their roles well.

He went to the playoffs both years he was here and with seriously declining talent in 1999. Jones fired him after barely any time here because in his deluded mind we still were Superbowl contenders, not an 8-8 team that goes one and done.

Didnt Aikman also have an issue with Gailey?

He is still the asshole who insisted on Greg Ellis over Randy Moss.

I always thought it was telling when you look at our record those years surrounding Gailey.

1997 - 6-10 (Switzer)
1998 - 10-6 (Gailey) / playoffs
1999 - 8-8 (Gailey) / playoffs
2000 - 5-11 (Campo)
2001 - 5-11 (Campo)
2002 - 5-11 (Campo)

Gailey wasn't the best coach ever or anything, but he was clearly coaching up those teams.

It's also a testament to the difference good coaching can make.

I wasn't a Gailey fan back then but at the age I was you're so accustomed to being really good. Those mediocre seasons felt like extreme failures. Had no idea then just how bad it could get.

Say there’s a “right coach” just sitting out there, and Jerry has that guy on a list of 5 coaches to hire. That “right coach” could bring a SB or two over the next 5 years.

Of the list of 5 coaches, 3 of them die the night before Jerry’s decision, leaving 2 coaches to choose from. Of the 2 surviving coaches on his list, 1 of them happens to be the “right coach”, he didn’t die. I give Jerry less than a 50-50 chance of hiring the “right coach”.

Gailey had a gimmicky offense that did not feature players like Irvin and Aikman who still thought they were stars. Aikman in particular had started to decline rapidly.

I remember multiple passes skipping off the ground in the playoffs against Arizona of all teams. We lost a home game and our offense had no juice. Gailey lacked next-level creativity and our talent was seriously overrated.

I didn’t know Gailey insisted on Ellis over Moss. I thought it was mainly because the team felt they couldn’t withstand two asshole WRs at a time when off field behaviors were under such scrutiny. At least not with that much draft capital.

Hell just a couple of months into OTAs Irvin stabbed Everett McIver in the neck.

Thought that was Jerry?
After the draft, Jerry said Ellis was a guy you'd be comfortable with "babysitting your kids." :picard Greg was no bust, but he was hardly the transformative talent Moss was.

It was more Jones call because the team had been through several scandals and Jones rejected Moss because there was some thoughts that he was also more potential problems. The PR on the team was pretty bad and getting Moss was deemed to possibly too much of a risk. The majority of fans in this area also was anti Moss.

At the time I was mixed but it’s not clear that he would have had a good career here with the path the franchise took. I consider Moss as maybe the best reciever to play the game. The hands were great, he could jump like Superman and has the second start speed like no other.

Jones wined and dined Moss. It was a big reason he loved going off against Dallas his rookie year.
