Bob, your latest presentation was terrible. Here's what I'm going to do for you. Remember that presentation you gave last year about how the dolphins are fucking at a much higher rate than normal? I want you go back and watch that shit and then redo this piece of shit.

How Jason Garrett’s handling of Brett Maher illustrates one of the reasons he’ll have a new employer next year
By Jean-Jacques Taylor

11:30 AM on Dec 10, 2019

FRISCO -- Jason Garrett finally fired kicker Brett Maher. Kai Forbath, a journeyman kicker, is his replacement.

Garrett’s decision comes about a month too late.

The reluctance to part with Maher, the first NFL kicker in four seasons to last long enough to miss 10 field goals in a season, is among the reasons Garrett will have a new employer next year.

He has only himself to blame. He refused to act, and it cost the Cowboys time after time after time this season.

We shouldn’t be surprised. This the Garrett way. This has been the story of his season and his career. He’s excellent at long-term planning and awful at short-term planning.

He’s a thinker, a coach with a big brain who likes to work methodically through problems to find solutions. The problem, of course, is that you don’t have time in an NFL game or season to have think tanks.

The Maher situation is the same type of slow thinking that made him keep Chaz Green in the game at left tackle long enough to give up four sacks against Atlanta in 2017.

That decision resulted in Dak Prescott struggling the rest of the season because he was jumpy in the pocket, anticipating hits instead of reading coverages.

And it’s the same type of slow thinking that made him keep the same trio of receivers -- Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley -- intact long after it was an effective trio.

He’s become a reaction coach. Foresight is something other folks have.

Let’s just look at this season.

Against New England, Garrett opted to kick a field goal to pull Dallas within 13-9 instead of going for it on fourth-and-7 from the New England 11 with six minutes left. Those who specialize in football analytics will tell you going for it gave Dallas a better chance to win.

Owner Jerry Jones criticized the decision. The next week, Garrett went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Dallas 19.

Suddenly, he’s down with analytics. Whatever.

The Cowboys didn’t practice outside on Thursday the week of preparation for New England, even though the weather forecast called for wind and rain. Garrett said it’s because the Cowboys practice outdoors on Wednesday and indoors on Thursday.

Well, Prescott struggled to throw the ball in inclement weather for two series before switching to gloves.

The following week, the Cowboys practiced outdoors both days in preparation for the Dec. 5 game against Chicago.

Garrett, as many in the Cowboys’ organization will tell you, is stubborn to a fault.

He trusted Maher too much. He believed in the strong-legged kicker even after Maher’s performance should have squelched his confidence.

Maher is the only kicker in league history to make three field goals of more than 60 yards, including two this season. But he made only 20 of 30 field goals this season. He was 1 of 5 from 40-49 yards and 4 of 8 beyond 50 yards.

Who cares about a kicker’s leg strength when he can’t make the kicks he’s supposed to make?

Forbath, 32, has made 121 of 141 kicks in his career. He’s 11 of 18 from beyond 50 yards, but he’s made 11 of 12 from 40-49 yards since the start of the 2016 season.

Garrett’s continued trust and confidence in Maher played a role in many of the Cowboys’ losses during this slide.

Against Minnesota, Garrett trusted him to make a 57-yard field goal on the game’s first possession. He missed it, and the Vikings drove 57 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead en route to a 28-24 win.

He missed two field goals against Buffalo, a 35-yard attempt that was deflected at the end of the first half and a 47-yard attempt, in a 26-15 loss.

And against Chicago, Maher missed a 42-yard attempt that would’ve tied the score at 10-10 late in the first half.

The Bears then drove for a touchdown and a 17-7 lead. In the fourth quarter, after the Cowboys pulled within 24-14, Maher sent the kickoff out of bounds, giving the Bears field position they used to score a game-clinching touchdown.

Apparently, Garrett had seen enough. Too bad it took so long.

“Maher did “it” the right way. He was the right kinda guy.

He missed all those kicks with the integrity of a person with the highest integrity.

The only problem with Brett Maher was, we couldn’t get permission to clone him 52 times. I felt like we would win a championship with a roster made up of only Brett Maher. 53 bodies made up of scratching and clawing, day to day mental toughness, the maturity of a very mature human being. Look, if you were to dissect Brett Maher, literally do a Y incision autopsy when he dies, I’m convinced the hearts of 1,000 warriors would come spilling out of his chest, gushing out with the intensity and passion like you’d expect from a volcano. He’s a volcano spewing, but instead of hot lava, he would spew hot rightness, if you will.

Some will say Brett Maher lost his job, some may even say he got fired. The truth is, the Dallas Cowboys couldn’t hold him anymore.

Some will say Brett missed kicks. The truth is, Brett Made things. Brett made me smile. Brett made me laugh. Brett made me his grandmas famous tamale pie once. Brett made a lot of things, that stuff counts, too, it won’t show up in the stat line, but it definitely made it up on the scoreboard of life.”

Garrett takes the course of least resistance and it is reflected in his coaching style. Urgency is never a criteria for this team until they get into a crises situation. At that point the players seem to get energized but more often than not it is too late. They seem to take on the less urgency attitude from the way they execute the plays. Garrett can not adopt the killer instinct mode when the team gets on top. They let up because they have been accustomed to doing so and then the game soon gets in crisis mode again. That is a trait from the leader and the team has adopted it.

I'm not dismissing the points made about Garrett in the article but I suspect jeri doesn't make it easy to cut players, especially if they're compensated with significant draft capital or $$

I remember jeri being pissed when Jimmy cut Curvin Richards without consulting him so I am sure once Jimmy was run off, a cumbersome process was put in place that had to be followed before anyone could be cut

gawd damn, how many fucking times a week does he go on that show?

More importantly, WHY does anyone listen??

Seriously, turn the damn dial people and quit giving him a platform for his nonsense

He would curl up in a ball and cry if people quit paying attention to him and it wouldn't cost fans anything to do this

I suspect that’s Jerry the businessman trying to talk Urban Meyer down a million or two per year.
I'm guessing Jerry's success rate on hiring coaches is much lower. Again, I can't think of a good hire outside of Parcells and Jimmy Johnson.

You want to keep Garrett?
No, just saying that you used that smiley in a way that has never been done before on this board.
