this boom-then-bust approach is the opposite of the stephen jones approach that gets us to the 1st round of playoffs

for 4 or 5 boom years, go for the trophy while blowing up salary cap
  • sign top free agents to multi-year contracts designed for restructuring
  • keep restructuring contracts to extend this period as long as possible

for 2 or 3 bust years, tank-athon and salary cap reset
  • trade away top assets except qb (if we have one worth keeping) and young top players.
  • young players need time to season but tanking allows them to get experience
  • tanking -> top picks - pick up at least 2 top draft picks every cycle, plus top second round picks basically late 1st rounds.
  • unused budget flows to future years that allow us to spend like crazy in the boom years

cycle repeats itself

the premise is superbowl-or-tank

As long as foam fingered morons keep this franchise at record profits, this is the formula. Playoffs every other year, first round exits. No impact free agents.

i actually think my approach can be marketed just as well if not better

when we go for it, business will be great
if you go deeper into playoffs, overall business will make up for if not exceed the sort of playoff team we have been

when we tank, we talk about new players like how teams talk about new blood

Devils advocate for a minute: Jerry did have the Go For It mentality. That got us Joey Galloway, Detroit Roy Williams, and Mo Claiborne.

And I don't think you can tank everything for multiple years in this business when you have a good QB. Fans wouldn't accept willingly forfeiting entire seasons, nor should they.

We need something in the middle - neither too wildcatty nor too cheap - and most of all better judgement and intelligence when making the moves.

Was Jerry really 'going for it' or was he making decisions based on potential jersey sales? I don't trust the MoFo.

Yet they acquired Cooper to take Dallas to the next level. That didn't work either.

It's not actually a bad strategy and we see NFL teams starting to do it. The problem is you have to have a QB. But this offseason it seemed like even those are being traded.

it has to be kept simple so the Jones can execute.

This middle ground you speak of, sounds like what many here preach every day. Home grow talent, play FA in a smart way, add significant talent in choice spots at specific times. This can be done much better.

That's the problem, the Cowboys will never execute the all in portion.
and we know its not the old man, cause his ass would pull the trigger easily. The Rams pulled an old style Jerry move from circa 1994/5. Damn the torpedoes, mortgage them draft picks.

The QB forgot how to find open receivers. If only Coop had run 5 yard curls over and over.....

cooper was a trade
i am talking free agency, and using it continuously for multiple top players for a few years in a row
not for has beens
and the willingness to let the cap blow every 4-5 years to reset the cap
which effectively tanks the team to get top draft picks

middle of the road does not work
go all in for a few years
and then let the cap really blow to bottom out and tank for draft picks
