Y'all motherfuckers need Jesus. This was a good signing.
I know right.

It's not Gerlad McCoy in his prime but he's still better than the rest of the JAGs we're throwing out there at DT.

I hope drafting a DT is still on the table as an option in the 1st or 2nd round.

I can only even think of 2 DTs on our roster right now. This is only a 1 or 2 year stop gap.. DT should still be a high priority.

Maybe McCoy is better than Collins, IDK. But come on, the guys 32 and just not what he was. This better not be a lame excuse to pass on guys like Reader or Pierce. I honestly think McCarthy is calling shots that Garrett wasn't allowed to. I'm thinking he won't let "duct tape" signings be a part of the approach. Maybe he makes Jerry understand

We still need another DT. Is Marcell still available? I prefer someone a little younger.

McCoy was a beast in his prime but it's hard to get excited by a 32 year old DT. He isn't going to suddenly revert back to 27 year old McCoy.
His stats don't bare that out. He still had 5 sacks and almost 40 tackles last year. That's fairly well on par with the rest of his career.

Yeah I really like the leadership he brings. And it sounds like he was better last year than maybe I realized. Mostly because that Panthers team was a hot mess.

Gerald McCoy named Panthers' most underrated player by PFF this year

Not everything has worked out the way the Panthers had hoped this year. Injuries to Cam Newton and Kawann Short have made competing extremely difficult in a deep NFC field. That said, not everything has gone bad.
Some of general manager Marty Hurney’s pickups in free agency have performed quite well, especially defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. He has been named the team’s most underrated player of the 2019 season by Pro Football Focus. McCoy has destroyed the narrative that he’s washed up by defending the run well and getting after the quarterback.
“So far, McCoy has earned an 82.4 grade that ranks 11th among all interior defensive linemen, and he has shined specifically in run defense, as his 89.4 run-defense grade is the third-best at his position, trailing behind only Aaron Donald and Calais Campbell. His performance as a pass-rusher hasn’t been too bad either, with 30 pressures generated in his 10 games (12th).”
So far, he’s posted four sacks, eight quarterback hits and six tackles for a loss. With just an $8 million cap hit this year, McCoy is one of the top bargains in the league at his position.
McCoy is one of several defensive veterans that are either playing on one-year deals or are in the final year of their contracts. The unit might look very different next year, but the Panthers should try to keep him around for another run in 2020.

If McCoy is the only DT we sign then yea, it's underwhelming even if I do like the signing in a vacuum. With that said, I'd be shocked if we didn't make at least one more signing along the DL.

Yea, he was very solid from what I saw out of him last year and he was playing in a relatively foreign scheme after the Panthers switched to a 3-4.

He's a good player, better against the run than Collins and at least his equal as a pass-rusher, and as long as they didn't give him something crazy like 10+/year then it's a solid signing that needs to be followed by a few more.

From a leadership perspective you can't ask for more. I'd still sign another and have no reservations about drafting a DT. We need numbers and depth at DT in the worst way.

Excellent deal that should leave plenty of space to add another DL or two.
Yeah 6 mil a year sounds like a bargain for a guy you at least know what you're getting. You don't really have the upside with him that you'd like but I think he is a good solid piece with great leadership qualities.

If we can get a guy like Gerald McCoy for roughly 6/year, why are we rolling with Crawford and his cap hit of 9 million?

I'm holding out hope that they're keeping him on the roster for now to see how FA shakes out and then once they know what they're working with they'll either restructure and bump his salary down to about 2-3 or cut him outright.
