So in your opinion why did their offense change? I get the idea that their QB regressed but why? Why is he not taking the same shots. They still have two very highly rated OTs. If it's not a drop off at WR (they lost 3 really good ones to the draft) why the change?
I'm honestly curious. I really enjoyed watching their offense last year. Ewers accuracy was hit or miss but the way he slung the ball over was a blast to watch. Now it's like watching paint dry. I thought Bond was going to be another Worthy type dynamic speed receiver. Instead their best WR has been Golden (Or maybe Helm who has been pretty fun to watch admittedly)
That's a very good question and my guess is that Sark has a lot to do with it as he's just another in a long line of offensive coaches who eventually forget what made them so successful and start overthinking things.
He's a great offensive mind, no doubt. But as
@Simpleton mentioned the other day, it's always these offensive gurus who start getting too cute and start getting swept up in wanting to show everyone how smart and how creative they are.
So to directly answer your question, there's 3 key reasons for the offensive struggles and contrast to last year's unit:
Sark's situational playcalling and offensive design shifting, Ewers' regression, and the last one is actually a combination of both aforementioned reasons -- Sark losing confidence in Ewers but yet sticking with him.
Bob Sturm actually did a piece on this after the Arkansas game and he showed what he thought was a QB who had become gun shy, but also one that looked like he was being instructed to get the ball out earlier than he was back in September. Hence, why the ball was coming out faster and so many passes were going very short distances in the air.
It's one of the many reasons why not giving Manning a shot is so frustrating -- because clearly you've lost confidence in Ewers.
I get that he's young and largely inexperienced, but at this point, I'm willing to roll with that because I'm convinced we won't get past Ohio State or win the NC with Ewers at the helm.
At least Manning gives you more mobility and throws it down the field. It's no coincidence that all of the biggest plays that Isaiah Bond made were in the games that Manning played in.
So even if it's just a series here and there, I really hope we finally give him some reps because we're wasting a very talented WR corps with Ewers.
Hell, he missed 3 deep ball TDs yesterday in that game alone because every deep ball he throws is badly underthrown.
Sadly, my guess is everything stays the same and Ohio State pulls away and wins by 14-17 points after Texas' offense goes into another mid-game slumber.
