He's a compiler, but so was Art Monk, who didn't have a signature catch.

Gore is Hall of Pretty Good to me.
Definitely. He was never a great player. Throw him in the Hall of Fame for multiple injury recoverers if you want.

But the Hall is mostly the Hall of Pretty Good now anyway, so he'll probably make it.

A couple things.

Monk won the super bowl three times as a prominent weapon.

Monk led the league in receiving yards in 1984.

Monk led the league in receptions in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1989, and 1991.

Gore never won the super bowl. Gore never won a rushing title.

Gore had 1 season over 1500 yards. Gore played 16 seasons but only 9 -slightly more than half - of his seasons went over even 1000 yards.

Gore has 16000 yards rushing but the final 6 he was well past his prime, generally not putting up good stats anymore or particularly effective, but added 5000 WGAF yards to his total.

His 16000 yards puts him 3rd all time, but if you take his empty 5000 yards from his final 6 seasons he'd be around 11000 and around 24th all time around the likes of warrick dunn and lesean McCoy.

Monk has a legitimate case. Gore does not.

Hall of very good, sure. But his one selling point - 3rd all time rusher - is not legitimate and doesn't hold up under scrutiny. I wouldn't reward a guy for refusing to retire long past his prime and just compiling. There's nothing else you can point to and make a case for him.

Frank Gore for sure isn’t a first ballot and starting next year he isn’t getting in until after Adrian Peterson.

Peterson is unquestionably better than Gore but has less yards than Gore. Which shows how quickly the total yardage argument falls apart.

Funny think is Peterson played in the NFL for a long time too. At least it felt like he did. But Gore's longevity was insane.

It's not even close though, Peterson was a special RB. In his prime he was clearly the best of the best in the NFL and an absolute freak. Gore was just a steady eddy for a long time in the NFL.

That WR logjam is interesting. Hines Ward and Steve Smith dropped off while Wayne and Holt remained. Doubtful either make it this year with Fitzgerald being a first ballot shoe-in. They’ll have a couple more years window before Julio Jones enters the fray

I think it was Peter King who once said his criteria for a player to get his vote for the Hall of Fame was "can you tell the story of the NFL without mentioning his name".

Doesn't matter if someone hung around too long, apparently... Fucking Favruh was around probably 3-5 years too long and he was in on the first ballot. Now before anyone says I'm comparing Gore to Favruh, I'm not. I'm just saying just because someone is around past his prime doesn't matter.

This is Woodson’s best chance with only Brees and Fitzgerald as sure-fire HOFers.

Kuechly will probably get in this year, too.

I disagree vehemently and hate to say it, but adding Eli Manning gives this class the media sizzle

There’s your five

I think you're misunderstanding the argument. Farve has MVPs, the Super Bowl, was among the best 2 or 3 at his position during his era, AND has the longevity stuff. Same with a guy like Monk. Gore has JUST the yardage total and no real other argument.

It's not that Gore stayed around too long that's the issue, it's that him staying around too long artificially propped his ONLY argument for the Hall.

By the way, you can certainly tell the story of the NFL without mentioning Gore.

Longevity of mediocrity is a lame qualification.

Instead of focusing on your prime game changing years, let’s promote the mediocrity of your worst years.

“Hey, dad, tell me more stories about Jerry Rice as a Seahawk, Bruce Smith as a Redskin” said no kid ever.

Emmitt hung around 5 years too long also, while you're bullshitting.
