The 2014 defense couldn't generate any pass rush but there were two things they did well that year:

One, they forced turnovers.

Two, they got clutch stops in so many games to either close out a victory or get the ball back to the offense so they could drive for the win.

I don't think there's a single member of this board that wouldn't sign up for that right now.

So if this defense's ceiling is the 2014 defense, especially if we can add a decent pass rush to it, I'll be absolutely thrilled.
Yea this DL is way more talented both at DT and edge than the 2014 group, if Eberflus and his crew of flunkies can get the back 7 to cover cohesively we might be in business.

The Fan was saying the Cards are down a half yard per rush this year, while we're up a yard and a half.

I wonder if this could get Jerry to realize maybe you should pay a great assistant a few million instead of drafting OL so high and then paying them fortunes.

I agree with all this. It's also about speed at LBer. Speed that the young LBers have but they don't know what they are doing. If you get Overshown and Shemar continues to develop and Loofa makes plays without rhe bonegeaded mistakes, maybe LBer speed goes from a negative to a positive.

It's amazing what coaching can do for an Oline regardless of talent. I'm not saying talent doesn't matter but it certainly gets overrated compared to the coaching. Imagine having 3 extra first round picks to build out the team instead of having them invested in the Oline?

Could there be any teams out there who might have had a 1st round grade on Mazi?

This is what I've been saying for about 5 years now.

Teams like the Rams, 49ers, Packers and others trot out average to slightly above average OL talent and get better results than we were getting with better talent because of the coaching/offensive systems they had in place.

I still think it's worth it to invest in the OL though because if you have top talent and top coaching you end up in a situation like the Eagles where you make 2 Super Bowls in 3 years with a RB playing QB.

Luckily we're already well down that road and don't need any more big investments in the OL, particularly with Thomas looking like a starting caliber OT.
