It certainly isn't the head coaches job to keep track of downs. He's got a lot going on. And with the clock running down, he immediately called a timeout after seeing everywhere it was showing 3rd down. Whichever lackey tracks downs didn't get it it to him in time, apparently. Even Romo was hollering for a timeout. Then when they realized it was 4th down, had the ability to say the timeout shouldn't have been called. Fat Mike didn't have that option once it was called. Oh well.Yeah, I get that. I was thrown off at first too. But to me it's like the clock management snafu at the end of the Chargers game. It's literally Mike's job (or someone else designated on the sideline's job) to get this stuff right. You can't have your head coach being like Ron Burgandy - "he'll read whatever you put on the cue card" - if you're trying to win a championship.
