Yeah, I get that. I was thrown off at first too. But to me it's like the clock management snafu at the end of the Chargers game. It's literally Mike's job (or someone else designated on the sideline's job) to get this stuff right. You can't have your head coach being like Ron Burgandy - "he'll read whatever you put on the cue card" - if you're trying to win a championship.

It certainly isn't the head coaches job to keep track of downs. He's got a lot going on. And with the clock running down, he immediately called a timeout after seeing everywhere it was showing 3rd down. Whichever lackey tracks downs didn't get it it to him in time, apparently. Even Romo was hollering for a timeout. Then when they realized it was 4th down, had the ability to say the timeout shouldn't have been called. Fat Mike didn't have that option once it was called. Oh well.

I think, unless I’ve further confused myself about the sequence, but I’m pretty sure it should have been 2nd and 25 and not 3rd and 25.

It wasn’t a dead ball foul if I remember right. The penalty that was accepted occurred during the play.

That was the reasoning for not getting penalized for both flags.

They lost the down for the unsportsmanlike. If they accepted the hold it would have only been third down. Of course we would have gotten the first too.

That’s what I was saying. The TD we scored to make it 20-14 I was sure was just a garbage time TD. Thought the Eagles would run out the clock and even if not our offense couldn’t put together another scoring drive.

Then Roy pick-sixed ‘em for the win. Glorious.

Also, I still remember your write up on the DCC after that game.

The 17th game. We played the same place'd team in a division from the other conference. This year was AFC East for the 17th game, which is why the WTF played the Buffalo Bills and so on for Jets/Eagles with Dolphins/Giants

Me too. And I think the confusion from which down it was came because of the clusterfuck of the dual penalty on Williams setting it all up.

What the head coach should be focused on at that moment is how much time is left and what is the immediate next move (e.g. when will the timeout be called) after the play. It is his decision and his alone. Even if he isn't personally accountable for tracking every single down in the game, it's his responsibility to make sure a process is in place to get the correct information relayed to him.
