I think Parsons could develop into a elite level DE. He was a monster yesterday. If he plays the position consistently (and can hold up physically), he has the potential to be a consistent All Pro at the position. His nose for the football is incredible.Micah Parsons had 4 QB hits yesterday, do you want to guess the last time DeMarcus Lawrence had that many?
4 years ago against the Cardinals when he had 3 sacks in 2017, where he had 6 hits. And before that?
Never! He has never had 4 or more QB hits in a game besides that Cardinals game.
And Randy Gregory?
Also never!
So you might be thinking yea, but our edge rushers are meh, how about a future HOF'er like Khalil Mack?
You also have to go all the way back to 2017 for his last 4+ QB hit game, and he only had exactly 4 in that particular game. And before that?
He got exactly 4 twice in 2016, went 4+ twice in 2015 (4 once, 7 another time), and zero in 2015. So in his 7+ seasons Khalil Mack has gotten 4+ QB hits in a game exactly five times, and only ever once more than 4.
And how about the Redskins vaunted Montez Sweat and Chase Young?
A total of 0 games with 4+ QB hits over 3 combined seasons!
Myles Garrett?
Three times in 4+ seasons, and only once over 4.
Joey Bosa?
5 times in 5+ seasons, and only once over 4.
It's only one stat in a vacuum but there is a strong correlation between QB hits and sacks, which is to say that usually the league's top sack leaders more or less directly correlates to the league leaders in QB hits. Last year the top 10 was TJ Watt, Leonard Williams, Carl Lawson, Aaron Donald, Chris Jones, Joey Bosa, DeForest Buckner, Trey Hendrickson, Stephon Tuitt, and Za'Darius Smith.
Out of those 10, 6 finished in the top 10 in the league in sacks, Buckner finished 11th, while 2 of the other 3 (Bosa, Jones) are two of the best pass rushers of this generation.
Now, I'm not saying Parsons is ever going to be the pure pass rusher any of those guys are but it is pretty god damned special that our rookie LB who was drafted to play a role akin to a Bobby Wagner or Devin White had to basically move to full-time edge rusher in the 2nd game of his career and put up a stat line that rivals some of the best edge rushers of this generation, some of whom are lock future HOF'ers.
I will admit that I jumped the gun early on him at DE. Much better as the game went on.
Yes.Would you rather have a great DE or a great LB?
Apparenty, Parsons could be either, or both.
I don't think you want him playing full-time DE because he's going to get worn down playing the run against OT's that outweigh him by 70-80 lbs. The plan they had for him before yesterday was correct, line him up both off the ball as a traditional LB as well as on the LOS like a quasi 3-4 OLB, and then in clear pass rushing situations you either line him up on the edge and let him go or move him around and blitz him from different angles.I think Parsons could develop into a elite level DE. Fun fact, Micah is only 6 lbs lighter than TJ Watt.I don't think you want him playing full-time DE because he's going to get worn down playing the run against OT's that outweigh him by 70-80 lbs. He had to focus exclusively on edge rushing yesterday because of Gregory/Lawrence being out, and he'll do plenty of that once one/both of them are back, but you don't want to just line him up with his hand down 50 times a game and tell him to work on an island against an OT.
Watt isn't a full-time DE either though really, they move him around plenty so he isn't going heads up against an OT every play. There's no point in wearing down a guy like Parsons who has the kind of explosiveness that he has, you want to keep the wear and tear in check while also having the flexibility to bring him from all over the field and confuse offenses.Fun fact, Micah is only 6 lbs lighter than TJ Watt.
Would anyone trade Parsons for either corner we had targeted? This guy….
