K/P isn't that Schmitty's dream come true? I'll be honest I didn't even realize he was a kicker. I thought he was a punter only.
I wouldnt say that was his dream. That includes Garrett, some leather, and whip cream. Throw in a SBK approval to top it off.

Fuck yeah, sign me up for a Kicker/Punter combo.

Still don't understand why that wouldn't be feasible and valuable.

Four words: single point of failure. What happens if this dual kicker/punter gets hurt during a game and he's the only specialist active on gameday? You get Jeff Heath (that's Dallas Cowboys starting safety to you) to kickoff and punt? You'd literally have to go for every 4th down. Sure the probability is low but if something like that happens you're pretty much screwed in the active game, and right after you're scrambling to fill two positions with your ST's completely in flux. It probably isn't worth it unless you somehow find a guy who is elite at either kicking or punting, while at least average at the other.

Yeah I'm with you, I think you still have to have a second specialist on the team regardless. Even if one guy does both you almost have to have a second kicker or punter on the roster just in case. But it would still be nice to have a punter/kicker on the roster. If the other specialist gets hurt you basically don't miss a beat. As opposed to teams that are horribly handicapped in games when their kicker or punter gets hurt.

What is funny is that Schmitty thinks it is a brilliant idea that somehow nobody in modern history of the NFL has been smart enough to do. I guess they are just waiting for that unicorn who can do both equally well.

Or you have another guy that can function in dual roles. Danny White was our punter for years. But you can't have one guy trying to do both kicking duties. The dude gets hurt you can't punt and you can't kick EXPs or FGs.

It used to happen every now and then.

Sounds good in theory, but I think it's just too hard to find one person who is among the best in the world at both skills. You're competing against people whose entire careers -- even lives -- are devoted to one or the other.

I believe Russell Erxlebin did it back around the early 80s.
You are right, but that lasted two games until he strained his hamstring and missed the rest of his rookie season.

He had six total FG attempts in his career.

That's basically what happened to the Seahawks in the playoff game last year anyway.

This is a long ago argument that has been resurfaced here, but my argument was, find a kicker and teach him to punt, because IMO, punting is probably a lot easier.
