The
Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver
Brandin Cooks in a trade with the
Houston Texans on Sunday, a team source told
The Athletic. Here’s what you need to know:
- Houston will receive a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round pick in exchange, according to the source.
- Cooks caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games with the Texans last season, his third in Houston.
What this says about Dallas’ intentions
This is yet another example of a different posture out of Dallas this offseason. Cooks fills a spot they dealt with for the entirety of the 2022 season as they were caught shorthanded at one of the most important spots on the field. When
Noah Brown is arguably your second-best receiver for most of a season, chances are the front office let you down.
But, to go get Cooks for the price of a couple of Day 3 picks in the next couple of drafts confirms what we saw earlier in the week with five-time Pro Bowl cornerback
Stephon Gilmore. This team is in a win-now mode that pushes a lot of leverage into 2023 where again the NFC does seem quite manageable. —

What he brings to Dallas
What sort of weapon is Cooks? Slight, but an expert route runner who wins all over the field, and can stretch you both vertically with his 4.3 speed and horizontally. He gets open in every scheme and has made a living in many locations with his crossers, digs and drags that go well beyond just a “go route” type of guy.
He wins contested catches and has exceptional releases. He should definitely add some real juice to this roster and that was the top objective in the offseason. Add guys who trouble opponents at skill positions and, until further notice, we have to have Cooks in that category and there is a greater than zero chance that he is rejuvenated to be in a spot now where he will play in big games and for a team with ambitions again. —

Cowboys going all in
This is a huge move for the Cowboys because it adds much-needed juice to the perimeter passing game and they didn’t have to give up much to get it. CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup and Cooks should provide quarterback
Dak Prescott with answers to every potential coverage that opponents will be able to throw at them. Adding Cooks also means the Cowboys don’t have to reach for a wide receiver in next month’s draft.
Between this move and the trade for Gilmore, the Cowboys have left no doubt about how important they believe this upcoming season is for the franchise. Critics have been complaining about Dallas’ conservative offseason approach for years. The last week shows the Cowboys have heard those complaints and also believe they needed to be more aggressive. This is now a roster that has a legitimate shot at making the deep playoff run that has been missing in Dallas since the mid-1990s. —
