Cowboys offensive coordinator search: 7 candidates to replace Kellen Moore
The
Cowboys announced Sunday night that there was a
mutual parting of ways between them and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who held the position for the last four seasons.
Despite the Cowboys ranking in the top six in scoring offense in three of those four seasons, their offensive struggles the past two years in playoff losses to the
San Francisco 49ers led to criticism. The play of franchise quarterback
Dak Prescott was also inconsistent, particularly near the end of this season. His 15 interceptions were tied for the
NFL lead and also a career-high despite playing in only 12 games. Prescott played arguably the best game of his career in Dallas’ wild-card win at Tampa Bay. He played two of the worst games of his career in the season finale at Washington and then in the divisional round loss to the 49ers.
This was clearly not just an issue with Moore, whose work as offensive coordinator has led to him interviewing for multiple NFL head coaching positions over the last two seasons. But some type of change needed to happen.
“After continuing through our end-of-season review process and having additional discussion, Kellen and the Cowboys reached a mutual decision to part ways,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. “The production of our offense and his mentorship of Dak were at the center of Kellen’s impact, and we are grateful for his tenure and leadership.”
Getting Prescott back on track and finding a way for the offense to take the next step in the playoffs will now be tasked to a new offensive coordinator.
The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that the plan is for McCarthy to calls plays, something he did for nearly all of his 13 years as
Green Bay Packers head coach. McCarthy has been adamant that whoever calls the plays needs to be the one installing them during the week, meaning even more time for the head coach to spend with that group. Having a defensive coordinator with head coaching experience like Dan Quinn certainly helps with that type of staff adjustment.
The Cowboys also announced Sunday that quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier would not be returning. They announced last week that running backs coach Skip Peete and offensive line coach Joe Philbin would not have their contracts renewed. So, there are several positions to fill, but those likely won’t happen until the next offensive coordinator is identified.
Who will that be? Here are seven candidates to know.
Brian Schottenheimer. He was a consultant on the Cowboys staff this season. In that role, he helped Moore and Quinn on game planning and preparation for future opponents. Schottenheimer, 49, was passing game coordinator for the
Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. He was offensive coordinator for the
Seattle Seahawks from 2018 through 2020. McCarthy’s first NFL coaching job was as an offensive quality control coach under Marty Schottenheimer, Brian’s dad, for the
Kansas City Chiefs in 1993.
Ben McAdoo. The former
New York Giants head coach held the consultant role on the Cowboys’ staff during the 2021 season. He spent this past season as the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator. McAdoo, 45, was an offensive quality control coach with the
Saints in 2004 when McCarthy was offensive coordinator. When McCarthy was hired as 49ers offensive coordinator in 2005, McAdoo was hired as assistant offensive line coach. McAdoo was then an assistant with the Packers, TE coach and then QB coach, during McCarthy’s first eight seasons as Packers head coach.
“He’s a great resource for us,” McCarthy said of McAdoo before the 2021 season. “I have a long history with Ben. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ben as a football coach. … It was a very easy decision because I know the value of what Ben McAdoo can bring to your staff.”
Brian Johnson. The
Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach was Dak Prescott’s QB coach during his standout junior and senior seasons at Mississippi State. Considering the improvements Eagles QB
Jalen Hurts has made over the last year, this would certainly be an interesting addition. Johnson, 35, is in his second season with the Eagles. He has no other NFL coaching experience. He was the offensive coordinator and QB coach for the Florida Gators in 2020.
Kliff Kingsbury. The recently fired
Arizona Cardinals head coach likely wouldn’t take the position unless he was going to call plays, but he’s arguably the biggest name available and there is a connection with McCarthy. Kingsbury, 43, was on the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad in 2004 when McCarthy was the team’s offensive coordinator. McCarthy has spoken multiple times over the past few years about how highly he thinks of Kingsbury.
Zac Robinson. The former NFL quarterback has spent the last four seasons on Sean McVay’s coaching staff with the
Los Angeles Rams. Robinson, 36, started as an assistant quarterbacks coach and has worked his way up to passing game coordinator/QB coach. He doesn’t have any coaching connections to McCarthy or the Cowboys, however, he seems to be the next in line from McVay’s staff to eventually get an OC position. Robinson was a seventh-round pick in 2010, playing for the
Patriots, Seahawks,
Lions and
Bengals in four seasons.
Klint Kubiak. The 35-year-old was the
Denver Broncos’ passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach this season. He was the
Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator in 2021. His father, Gary Kubiak, coached in the NFL for 25 years, which included 10 years as head coach of the
Texans and then Broncos, where he won a Super Bowl in 2015. Klein Kubiak, Klint’s brother, is an area scout for the Cowboys.
James Campen. He might not be the team’s next offensive coordinator, but there will likely be interest in adding the longtime offensive line coach to the staff. Campen, 58, was on McCarthy’s coaching staff his entire time in Green Bay, including 11 seasons as offensive line coach. During McCarthy’s final year with the Packers, Campen was OL coach and run game coordinator. McCarthy has had an offensive line coach as his offensive coordinator in the past as Philbin, Dallas’ former O-line coach, was Green Bay’s offensive coordinator from 2007 through 2011 and then again in 2018.
