Do the Cowboys need to win out?

December, 3, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

The final four weeks of the NFL season is here and the Cowboys control their own fate.

They're tied for first-place in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles, but own the first tie-breaker against their rivals. Given the fluid situation in the division, especially with theNew York Giants still believing they have a playoff shot, the Cowboys might have to win their remaining four games to win the division.

"I think they’re really being tested," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said after the victory against the Oakland Raiders last week. "Two teams (Oakland and New York Giants) we just played really have competed, and we’ve had some adversity. It’s just the kind of thing that you know, to have a good team, you’re going to have to go out and overcome (some things). And we’ve had two good chances to learn how to do it with this team, and we’ve succeeded. And that’s going to pay off for us."

The Cowboys have failed to clinch a playoff berth because of losses in the regular-season finale the past two seasons.

This might be different given the next three games.

Dallas visits Chicago on Monday night football, 10 days between their last game. The Bears have problems at quarterback and there's no guarantee starter Jay Cutler will play in Soldier Field.

The Cowboys come in on a two-game win streak and are expected to get some injured players back, such as starting middle linebacker Sean Lee and quite possibly strong side linebacker Justin Durant.

A home game awaits the Cowboys the following week against the reeling Green Bay Packers -- 0-4-1 since Aaron Rodgers went down -- and there's no guarantee Rodgers participates to save their season.

The final two games are within the division against Washington, eliminated Monday night in the loss to the Giants, and the finale against the Eagles.

"I still think that it’s going to come down to beating the Eagles," Jones said. "Then again, I’m not forgetting about Washington. We’ve got these two away, two at home, formidable teams. Two of them are neck and neck. One of them will probably get Rodgers back, so those will be big games for us. Chicago on the road. Washington on the road. Believe you me, they’re going to sit here with some resolve after a game like they had the other night. So we’ve got our hands full. This will be a good test for us. If we can come through this thing and somehow get them and have some success and maybe have a chance for the playoffs, we’ll have run a good gauntlet that gets us ready if we don’t get hurt in a key spot."

What a dumb fucking question.

Of course they don't need to win out. They can lose at least one more and still be in a position to beat the Eagles and win the tiebreaker in the season finale. Simple math, Cal.

Not only that, but if they win the next 3 (Chicago, Green Bay, Washington) and Philly loses just one game between now and the finale, then the final game of the season will be irrelevant because they will have locked up the division due to holding a division record tiebreaker.

With that said, I don't care how average the Bears look right now or whether Rodgers plays or not, and if the Redskins are a mess. This team is totally incapable of reeling off 4 or 5 games at a time. They're too average and too inconsistent to do so.

So that last game is going to matter.....unless the Cowboys find a way to lose multiple games which is very possible with this group.

Exactly. I was just about to say that.

I don't think there are any scenarios mathematically where they would actually have to win out.

Very, very possible, if not likely.

Please explain why/how it is going to be any different this year. This group has a history of failing in December and currently has a historically bad defense. You're supposed to be Mr. "Wait and See". If you haven't seen enough by now to know that it isn't going to end well then I have to wonder what you've been watching.

I can't explain whether or how things will be different. I will have to wait and see. I am taking a hopeful mode rather than an immediate write off.

OK, let me be direct...what you think is going to happen over the last 4 games of the season? None of this "wait and see" stuff. Think about it objectively and tell me how you think things are going to play out.

You have gotten awfully persnickety here lately.
I think you might be thinking he forgot the "G" in WGAS. That was my first thought, too.

It's his tried and true catch phrase, WAS. Wait and see.

I really don't know how it will play out but I feel Dallas can compete with all remaining opponents if they can get some of their players back.
Chicago is a winnable game if they can clamp their running game.
Green Bay is winnable if Rogers is still nicked up.
Washington is winnable if Griffin is Corraled early because he tends to come apart as the game progresses.
Philly is the toughest opponent as things stand now because they are balanced on offense.

If I had to predict best case at this time looks like 3 and 1.

Gotcha. I definitely think 3–1 is doable but, as you said, "best case". Personally I think 1–3 is more likely.

The Bears are similar to Dallas in some ways (ie, both defenses have completely collapsed) but I give them the advantage since they're playing at home & have a couple of the kinds of big WRs that give Dallas trouble.

If Rodgers is back, dinged or not, he'll light up the Cowboys' D. If he's out Dallas wins.

Washington is one Dallas should win but could just as easily lose on the road.

Philly is a toss up, IMO. I think Dallas wins if they've already played themselves out it. If it comes down to a "win and you're in" situation, I fully expect Dallas to fail.

I wouldn't underestimate Rodgers rust/apprehension at getting hit. But yeah it would suck if he comes back to play us. Best case scenario they get beat and mostly eliminated this weekend and the Pack decides to IR him.

Chicago has a very poor defense, and I expect DeMarco Murray will be the deciding factor.
Dallas is better than Washington, but the weather will limit the passing game making it a tougher game to win. But Dallas should be favored against 3-8 Washington.
Philadelphia has improved greatly since the yCowboys last played them, but it's a home game and the last 6 NFC East home teams have won divisional season finales with the playoffs on the line.

Green Bay is truly lost without Rodgers, but if they have him Dallas probably loses. I also see Dallas going 3-1 in this stretch. Hell with our luck both Cutler and Rodgers return and hit top form just in time vs. Dallas.

I know I will be fans of the Lions and Adrian Peterson the next two weeks.

Oh who am I kidding?

Both Cutler and Rodgers will sit and cheese-eating Dallas will still manage to lose both games.

They then squeak past Washington by the skin of their asses to back into a win-or-advance game vs. the Eagles because the Eagles lose to the Lions or Vikings.

Then they lose to the Eagles on a Romo strip sack fumble for a TD.
